I agree with that. However it came at the expense of every other attacker. We need Odegaard to find a bit of balance in that regard. As I've said before he's barely played with this new team so we need to give him time to figure it out on the pitch but we need him to evolve and open the team up a bit rather than just facilitate Saka.

Burnwinter 22/23 goal return is unlikely but if he keeps shooting like he did on Saturday he'll out perform last season and maybe hit his 23/24 sort of output again.

Qwiss I think Ode has been guilty of that for a while beyond just now. He always drifts over to the right with Saka and that side gets too congested and predictable with the other team just funneling their defence to that side because we more often then not refuse to go across to the other side.

awooga83 — fully agree, and it’s also partly due to Rice not being a true attacking 8. In that rarely do we see Ode on ball looking to find Rice in a more forward position. I’m not keen on replacing Rice but I have thought we’d go up a level with a more attacking 8 across from Ode who is happy to “end” moves (from a shot or final ball) rather than build.

MistaT tetball doesnt get aimplified by playing with two creative 8s, nor does is the EPL a good place to try it. we're not peps barca technically, so we're not going to drown teams in technical wizardry. we barely play through the lines as it is. we're a structure-first entity, and tet has shown to be fairly uncompromising on that unless we're desperately chasing a game. what we lose in pressing and defense we wont gain back in creativity. in short, the juice isnt worth the squeeze

Thought he was ineffective against Brugge. I'm confused about what he thinks his role is. Zero key passes, in game where your center forward and wingers are making runs all day against a bunch of part timers is weak sauce.

I'm not sure how often it makes sense to play Ødegaard as the most advanced midfielder. It just feels like his natural game is more like an 8 – he likes to drop deep, tidily circulate the ball, and play 'pre-assists' more than make goal contributions. And we're so good in build-up with the back 5 that we usually don't need so much ball retention in midfield.

I wonder whether Saka could play centrally, with Madueke on the right, particularly against more organized teams. As great as Saka is out wide I feel like I want our best and most intelligent attacker receiving the ball close to goal. And Noni is so good making things happen out wide.

The current premier league season disfavours Odes ability to press and resist pressing. It's become more direct and teams have also sussed out our false transitions we generate from Raya's out ball. That said the composure in possession is still there and played a big part against Everton.

I had a lot of free time at work today, so I was making fun of Wirtz on reddit to bait Liverpool fans. While doing that I remember another "number 10" that never scores or assists so I looked a little bit at just how bad Odegaard has been when it comes to end product. And I have found out something amazing.

The guy is going on 50 games with just 3 goals scored for us in the PL lol. He is on 47 now. Out of the 3 he scored one was a penalty vs Sotton on the last day of the season last year.

Then I said, let's see who is worse him or Wirtz. And it's both. I mean they have no end product. Funny how life is, I was clowning on Wirtz for nothing.
So this season.
In the PL Wirtz gets an assist every 547 minutes, and scores never (they took that one goal away from him). He has 2.
In the PL Odegaard gets an assist every 538 minutes and scores never. He has 1.

In the CL Wirtz(has 3 of them) gets an assist every 121 minutes while our boy gets one every 170, Odegaard only has 1.

I have not really watched Wirtz that much but I know, just like Odegaard he is a cardio man, gets his miles in there so at least there is that. No idea if he, just like our capitan also fucks up every single counter attack he is involved or if he slows the game down every action so he can pass the ball back to the right back.

It’s incredible how much he’s regressed. Remember that game against West Ham away when we were 4-0 and he single handily got us level. He was a joy to watch but peaked in 2024.

Sicario2 he was really good in the second half on Saturday, let's not forget. I do think, for the first time in his Arsenal career, his position looks like the next one you might be looking to upgrade, or even just do something different, on - but I'd be wary of rushing the judgement on him just yet.

For me with Ode there are shades of what happened with martinelli and what I mean is had a very productive season and then a sustained lower level but there seems to be a sense he's a great player it's going to come back rather then if he's failing to do it over two seasons that's starting to look like his norm. Good players contribute consistently for the team and right now I wouldn't have Ode as a certain first team player for us.

This season Wirtz is at 87th percentile in the league for xA, and Ødegaard at the 98th percentile. His assist count isn't going to leap ahead too fast with the strikers we've got and the finishing they're showing us.

Given Wirtz is more or less the player Ødegaard's detractors would've wanted us to sign to upgrade him, I'd say there's a note of caution regarding how easy it would be to do it. Put him behind Haaland for a season and he'd probably break the assists record.

Eze has shown an ability to do it, and so too Nwaneri.

Odegaard’s ankle must be decimated ans he no longer shoots and has clearly slowed, and perhaps his persona is frayed too after having a kid (no sleep, distracted). I say that kindly as my ankle has troubled me for years and energy were shattered for 2+ years after having my kid.

Yeah but this doesn't really stack up. If our 8s are creating chances our 9 and our wingers need to finish them. If the logic is just "none of our strikers score so our midfield needs to score" then we might as well argue our centre halves need to score because our midfield can't. Of course considering Big Gabi's scoring record maybe that's what we've been doing.
