flobaba There is an element of that but also we don't have players who make these passes. That run by Martinelli gets picked 999/1000 when we had played like Bergkamp, Fabregas and Ozil in the team. Odegaard's strength is more in his link play rather than his passing range.

JazzG This take on Ødegaard's passing range is another example of revisionism setting in; he's clearly shown decent range throughout his career (e.g. Havertz goal vs Chelsea last season or Martinelli v Brighton). Bringing Ozil into this comparison is particularly odd – Ozil thrived as an intricate link player, finding pockets between the lines, not pinging long balls over the top from the half way line. Much the same applies to Bergkamp. Now, Fabregas? That's a fair point. His raking, long forward passes were exceptional.

Haven't seen Ode this season, but generally when the team is that short it's not a question of vision - Igor Stepanovs would have spotted that run. Judging by the lines on the pich the distance is less than 15 yards. It's either an instruction or really lousy confidence.

I would guess it's a bit of both. Ødegaard's lousy confidence is what it is. It has also been confirmed in various ways Arteta's coaching methods include instruction on the proper parameters of situational decision-making, and that he uses plenty of negative reinforcement.

For example, after the match Arteta complained about "the defending standards and the errors after we gave the ball away, which is totally prohibited against this team." I reckon that (emphasis is mine) amounts to the language he uses in the tactical seminar and the dressing room creeping into his interview material.

That pass above to Martinelli is not an eye of the needle pass, it is a simple pass for any elite attacking midfield player. It is less than 20 yard pass not some 40 yard pass that Fabregas used to play with his eyes closed.

Also this idea that none of our players never make that run is also false, Henry a few years showed plenty of examples of the pass being missed. Odegaard isn't the only one guilty, we don't have a No.8 who makes those passes either. Hopefully this improves with Zubimendi who actually does make this pass. See video below for some examples

Well ackshually I also posted a 10 min video that has plenty of 20 yard passes - I just gave the two instances where it resulted in a goal. There’s chances that didn’t result in a goal as well.

Also why do I need examples of Ozil from Real Madrid? I watched the guy play for Arsenal for the better part of a decade!

My point is he doesn't make enough of those passes in past seasons. However the difference in those past seasons was he was doing a lot of other things to an exceptionally high level which he currently is not.

JazzG there's also a style of play issue which we are not taking into account in this discussion.

JazzG I think he has done in games where positionally he's spent more time in the final third. Whether the fact he doesn't do that consistently is tactical or mental on his part is up for debate (sadly, I think it may be the former) but he has the capacity to do it.
