we tried that against villareal and we looked like shit. I think we'll go with partey, lokonga/xhaka, odegaard in midfield, with ESR and saka/pepe playing free roles off the wing

Would have preferred Maddison as feel we needed a bit more dynamism and goal threat. However, our football last Friday, especially in the build up, was gash. So predictable. I don’t really rate Smith Rowe and having him as our only creative outlet would be madness.

Having rewatched Ofegaard’s highlights of his time with us, I was reminded of how much he brings others in to play.

Still has a few things to improve upon in his game, but he has time to work on those. The price made sense too.

Finally we have a handful of players who are genuinely good with the ball at their feet. White, Partey, Lokonga, Saka and Odegaard

Unless your striker is scoring 25 goals thats a line up thats going to struggle too often. We need someone banging in goals either off the wing or from midfield. Saka or Smith-Rowe would need to explode scoring wise for it to work.

Saka, Ødegaard, ESR, Partey, Tierney, White and a few others are very skilled players, but we lack goalscorers.

Who's the best finisher in the squad? Auba used to be the obvious choice, but he looks like he has quit football. I guess that leaves Laca, who can't run, Pepe, who is highly inconsistent, and Martinelli, who doesn't look ready. We'll struggle this season without more goalscorers in the team.

Probably Pepe now. We aren't going to solve that problem playing the way we do unfortunately.

I wonder will Arteta try Pepe up top this season at some point. With Ode, Saka and ESR I don't think he'll want to leave any of them out. If Arteta buys into the latter half of last season stuff, which he certainly seems to, then Pepe was the main goal scorer in that run.

Partey and Smith Rowe are perfectly tuned to his wavelength.

He'll never have an easier game, but he has such quality.

He's a multiplier. He also works really hard. His touch, his ball control, his accuracy, decision making and vision are outstanding. He has huge potential. It will be great for the club if he can fulfil it here.

the same critiques I had of ozil apply to odegaard - we need him to stay in attack mode and not drift to the margins of games. that is as much on him, as it is how the team is set up to play. he has the technical ability to do so many things, he just has to keep developing so he can maximise his impact on games

The players around him need to come alive when he's on the ball. Yesterday Saka, Pepe and Auba were constantly making runs and moving around him, it was an obvious move thanks to WBAs high line. But they need to do this when it isn't so obvious.

One thing was that he almost always had was Xhaka or Elneny supporting him. Big difference to how we have often seen us play and probably because of the quality of the opposition, but let's see.

That's been the case in pretty much every good performance we'd had under Arteta. I don't know why he so often sets the team up so that you end up with gaping spaces between the midfielders.

I think it's a consequence of setting out to dominate the game and get the defensiive line high up the pitch, but not being good enough and players not being confident enough to do it. I actually think that's the root cause of a nearly all of our problems, at both ends of the pitch.

So as a manager, if you know what you’re doing, you make adjustments to your attack and defense to compensate, don’t you? We can’t just say oh well the players aren’t good enough so we won’t play good team football.

Arteta did that in his first season here, and for parts of the second season, but what I think you do in the longer term is go and sign players that are comfortable playing that way. Hopefully Ramsdale, White, and Ødegaard, alongside the other players Arteta has signed in Gabriel, Partey, and Lokonga, make a difference.
