I'm not digging deep into the Greenwood story. I don't want to see the poor girl beat up or hear whatever sickening audio there is of whoever it is that was making the rounds. I find men who harass or even raise their voices in anger at women disgusting.
But, I believe in due process, and it seems there is ample evidence in this case. It's important to be extremely careful in casting judgement in these type of cases. I'm happy to let the cops do their investigation and let justice be served if he is found guilty at the end of the day. And if he is, good riddance. He'll get his due.
I also would have loved to see this discussion directed towards possible causative factors. Greenwood's background and upbringing for instance. I mean, the kid is what 20? He must have some deep rooted issues to be manifesting this sort of behavior (if allegations are proven true) at such an early age. Is that his first girlfriend? Has he shown misogynistic or abusive tendencies before? Red flags? Etc. Is there anything clubs can do to better assess the profile of their young players and help them in their personal lives and real life development? Yeah I know its Man U - Giggs et al, but surely there is someone, one of his mates perhaps who knows what's going on with him, and could have tried to intervene, or get assistance to the alleged victim sooner?
First of all, I'm very sorry if you or one of your mates has ever been falsely accused of sexual abuse of any kind, I imagine it's a terrible thing to go through and I hope things turned out well in the end. It's not a situation I or any of my mates has ever gone through. I do know a girl that's been raped though. I don't know her well, only seen her once or twice and never talked to her about it, but she's a childhood friend of one of my best friends and she wasn't even 18 when it happened to her. Police didn't believe her and fuck all happened. There's nothing in the world you can compare that too. I think it's one of the absolute worst things a human can do do to another human, if not the worst. So I hope you understand I'm not really able to stay calm when I hear of accusations like this.
And I do not believe in due process when it comes to sexual abuse towards women, especially when it involves millionaires as the predators, and neither do most of the women it happens to.
Jones did mention how often it happens in football, and yes, I do believe that football culture, the money and attention those guys get enable that kind of behaviour to a certain extent. As far as his upbringing goes, who knows, but he's an adult man, and I don't give a fuck if he was beaten as a child or whatever, it doesn't excuse his behaviour and should not be brought up as some kind of mitigating factor. As a society we need to learn from this and do everything we possibly can to make sure we don't raise or enable rapists of course, but the Greenwood case doesn't really give any new insights as to why it keeps happening.
As far as I know he knew the girl since school, they'd been together for a while, seperated when Greenwood chated on her with an icelandic model, and then got back together again. Although I do think I've read they've seperated again in the meantime. As far as red flags go, there was a video from a few years back doing the rounds that the girl posted on her IG, where Greenwood said "Let's go home so we can fuck. Do you want Daddy's dick?" before creepily putting his hand on her neck. So yeah, red flag, but all it lead to was him being called "Daddy Greenwood". She seemed fine with that as well, so fair enough. But it does show you, or at least me, that he's got a dysfunctional and twisted idea of sexuality. There's a myriad of possible reasons why that might be the case, too much porn too young, supressed sexuality because he's a shy guy, narcissistic personality disorder, childhood abuse, who knows, I doubt it'll come out. None of that changes the simple fact he's an abonimable twat though. And you'd agree if you listened to the audio and seen the pictures, although I do advise you to stay away from it, it'll just ruin your week.
If conclusive proof comes out that he was somehow framed and is innocent, I'll be the first do hang my head in shame and admit I did him a grave injustic, but I fucking doubt it. And him not going to jail because they settle outside of court or because she doesn't wanna press charges is not that.
