My guess is itโs a technical thing to do with time limits and new charges.
Topical but on a much lower level, is that lower league Scottish club Raith Rovers are facing a backlash at the moment because they signed David Goodwillie, who had spells at Blackburn and Blackpool so the name might be familiar.
In 2016 he was found guilty in a civil trial of rape, in a case brought by the victim after a criminal case didnโt go ahead. The burden of proof in the civil case was lower, and the judge ruled Goodwillie and another had raped the victim and she was awarded compensation. It was also later upheld in an appeal court.
Clubs still signed Goodwillie and faced criticism for it. Raith Rovers are just the latest, and their statement today in response to the backlash is quite staggering.
They have reversed the decision after huge fan backlash and the Scottish current and ex PM criticised the move.
Just curious though, why was he able to play for his current League 1 team without much backlash though for 4 years now?
Apologies for dragging the thread off topic again, but there's been a further twist in this tale.ย
Raith Rovers decided they wouldn't play Goodwillie and a few days ago announced he would return to Clyde (his previous club) on loan.ย
The backlash that wasn't evident previously at Clyde came this time Clrnc. The whole Clyde ladies team resigned and the local council, who own Clyde's stadium, effectively banned Goodwillie from entering it and threatened to end Clyde's lease if he did so. The council are citing a clause about restricting entry for those with "undesirable behaviour" as the reason and pointing to Goodwillie's lack of contrition as justification. The council also say they didn't have legal control of the stadium previously, hence no action when he signed a few years ago.
So as a result of all that Clyde are now terminating Goodwillie's loan agreement, which means he'll no doubt be sent back to Raith Rovers, who have said they won't play him.
A lawyer for his victim is also working to mount a private prosecution to have him convicted criminally for his crime.
But at least he received an apology on air from this guy
