Between ESR, Saka, Pepe, Odegaard and Martinelli we have the 3 positions behind the CF covered, there's no reason for Auba (or Willian for that matter) to play there.

Good to see Partey starting to show some form too, nothing spectacular last night, just a generally good performance holding that central midfield spot down.

Do you even drop anyone from last nights XI for the semi final in 13 days? Do Aubameyang and Ødegaard walk back in if fit in time? Theres a case for making no changes with maybe just Cedric brought in to release Xhaka.

I wouldn't bring Ødegaard back in. We play much more slowly when he's at 10 compared with ESR.

I don't think that's true, we were electric against Leeds and for the majority of the West Ham game. But I do like the Pepe - ESR - Saka forward line on the counter, it's electric.

I would bring Auba back in providing he can prove his form and fitness before then.

I have to say as good as Odegaard is I'm starting to wonder if its an extravagance to buy him. We have ESR and Saka who can both play in the same position to a high level and I don't really think Saka, Ode, ESR is an optimal 3, I'd rather have 2 of them plus one of Pepe or Martinelli. I think the balance is better in most games like that. If we have limited funds I do wonder if CM or RB is a better place to put our money. Then again Ode has proven to fit well so its a tough call.

We need real competition within the squad, and we need some players who can bring in actual quality if they have to come off the bench. I’d do it for those reasons.

Thats fair but having loads of competition in the attack midfield position is only so much use if you have Elneny and Ceballos fighting for a midfield spot and Cedric and Hector fighting for right back. We wont be given the resources to provide competition all over the pitch. Hell we don't even have a back up left back.

ESR, Saka and Odegaard are still young so they'll have natural dips in performances - I think it's a smart move to have all 3 plus Pepe, Martinelli to cover the front 3 positions. Plus we have a tendency to over rely on a few talented players and then run them to the ground.

We do need another CM though so it should be either/or if we intend on scrapping back into the top four.

I think we'll have enough to buy all three positions if we sell well. But given how much our level drops when ESR isn't fit I think it's essential that we buy another creative type. Odegaard is also unique in what he offers.

Odegaard can also play the same position Ceballos has been playing in the last two games as well.

Keep them, play them, rotate them, sub them, keep them fresh and reduce fatigue and injuries. No harm in having plenty of options in attack.

The bigger question is does getting Odegaard hinder ESR's development, as he will be pushed out wide, when he has been playing his best football / makes the most impact on the team when central. Might just be best to stick with Saka-ESR-Martinelli and buy cheap backup options for those positions rather than shelling out on a new starter.

Or continue the evolution of the system. Odegaard can play CM with ESR, Partey behind them.

Interesting, I was thinking more along the lines of Goon, and assume he would make us more competitive technically and at intensity against Villarreal.

As well as Ceballos has acquitted himself off the ball recently, that might be the way as Coombs also alludes.

If they're going to put Chambers in at RCB, they might as well put Chukwueze in for Dzeko, who seemed quite the menace from the highlights.
