If I'm supposed to believe Mustafi turned down a deal here in the summer just so he could have his contract cancelled in Jan in order to sign a 6 month deal with a chaotic relegation outfit, then call me a cynic because I'm not buying it. This is the guy who was supposedly being chased by Barcelona and Juventus not long ago. Me thinks his agent is a creative one.

It’s hard to believe everything you read in the papers.

The one that stands out most to me is Willian contract. He was on 140,000 / week at Chelsea. Yet we supposedly gave him an additional 60,000/week AND an extra year. He’s allegedly making 13m pounds more than he would’ve made had he stayed at Chelsea on the same money for just 2 years. That is either the stupidest negotiation or plain corruption.

Yeah I think if Arteta really wanted Mustafi he'd still be here till the end of the season at least.

Isn't having your contract canceled the best thing that can happen to a footballer? You get paid the remainder of your contract in a lump sum in addition to the salary at your new club (and a sign on-fee, I guess).

Wasn't it reported by some credible source? Makes perfect sense that Mustafi who didn't even make any bench most of the season wants to leave. Not getting any game time, thrashed by most of your club fans and getting your contract canceled for free is the best thing for him. If I were him I would have rejected the contract extension too.

It was Chris Wheatley I think, who also said Ozil was in serious talks with DC United a day before it was pretty much confirmed he was going to Fener. But he's notoriously close to the players (he worked for a few of them before returning to journalism), so any story will have likely been from the players camp.

Also, Mustafi was quite regular under Arteta before this season wasn't he? Captain claimed he was an Arteta favourite despite the fact that he was virtually the only warm body.

The 200k a week figure was pure BS from the papers to rile up the fans. Those papers even admit that his basic wage is less than what he used to earn at Chelsea.

Mikel Arteta wants Arsenal to tie Shkodran Mustafi down to a new contract.

The German defender has been performing well under Arteta since being brought back into the fold by The Gunners’ boss.

His current deal is due to expire at the end of next season, but Arteta is hopeful the club will sort an extension before then.

“That’s something the club has to address but he knows my opinion,” said Arsenal ’s head coach.

“I’m really happy with him as you can see. The way he’s playing, how committed he is with everything we’re trying to do, the level in his performance ever three or four days, he’s been really consistent.”

Those comments and the title appear to be saying Mikel likes Mustafi and is offering him an extension. It’s more of that frustrating football reporting Goon and I referred to.

All Mikel says is he likes the boys application, and then doesn’t offer a public opinion on contract extension. He actually takes the same approach to answering Lacazette questions. Yet the smart money is on Lacazette leaving this summer.

That is a deceptive piece of reporting. It would be good to see an actual article where Mikel says “I would like to extend Mustafi”

He's said the same thing about Laca and Luiz too, and while one of them may end up staying, you generally don't wait for players' contracts to go down to a year or expire before offering them a new one if you're desperate to keep them.
