Sidenote, and considering the club are making a thing out of it, but he's not worthy of the Number 10 when you think of it in terms of Dennis Bergkamp wearing it, but Gallas and late stage Özil have taken enough of the gloss off it for it not to be a big deal.

Don't care much about numbers. Players do though so they can be used to convince them about their importance. That Bergkamp was better doesnt mean anything as we're a much worse team now. ESR is important relative to the quality we have now so giving him number 10 to tell him that seems right.

Giving the number 10 to an academy graduate who loves the club and represents its future who also has the world at his feet is a no brainer.

I think he's done it enough to earn it. Gabriel hadn't done a thing when he got TAs number 6. Senderos used to wear it too.

but it's a number that doesn't have any particular significance at arsenal outside of bergkamp. like you said gallas had it. rvp, jack then ozil and now the smith has it. and from the old school merton, nicolas and george. it's just not a sacred number at arsenal.

great news. looking forward to more silkiness from the lad. hopefully his new status inspires him to shoulder more responsibility.

watching that 12 minute interview with him, you do sometimes worry if players of the new generation really feel like they've made it after landing their first big contract. hopefully ESR is one of the self-motivated ones
