Depends on what the team instructions / defensive patterns are. For example they back3 may have been instructed to slide across to provide assistance to Xhaka because of his lack of mobility. Further to this Mustafi was basically 'free' in the backline when Gabriel motioned to him as he's not marking anyone at that point.
you step across to cover an overload, not something like this. It doesn't really matter that Mustafi was free in the back line, if he runs across while Vardy is running forward he's not getting there. Xhaka doesn't really know where his man is, doesn't have the pace to catch up, Gabe leaves his man and gets caught not being able cover either. For his part, Mustafi should've continued running even if he wasn't going to catch up - I hate that he gives up half way. You never know if say Leno parries and spills it.
