Nobody wants to do the hard work. It could be a bit like the saying in procurement, “nobody ever got fired for buying IBM”. Do the safe thing. Why risk your job and reputation by working on a team plan and pulling the trigger on some upcoming guy who plies his trade for Fiorentina?

Doesn’t sound like the player himself is all that convinced though. I think he wants a move to a CL club and unfortunately that’s not really something we can realistically sell even for next season. Only hope really is that we are his only option.

Recent 'talk' has PSG being interested, and RM will also need to replace Modric sooner than later, so he may get his wish.

I am still not convinced that he will move in January unless the TV deal collapse has left all French clubs (apart from PSG and maybe Nice) in financial ruin and Lyon absolutely has to sell him .

Lyon are in a title run this season after many fallow years and would definitely like to hold on to him till summer.

I think he was the priority target as reported in the media, but we couldn't make a deal re structured payments as per the Pepe deal and there wasn't any release clause we could use as per the Partey deal. That we failed to sign our priority summer target is the biggest indicator to me that KSE have not put any additional money into the club to date, but have simply given permission for the club to spend differently to our financial model structures.

EDIT - TBH I think our struggles this season mean we have missed our opportunity unless there is a profound turn around in our form over the remainder of the season, and a lack of any acceptable offers from elsewhere.

I think their 'priority' is a sale of Depay in Jan as IIRC he is out of contract at the end of the season. It looked like he would go to Barca last summer but the deal fell through when Barca were unable to off load players to raise revenuues.

Every deal has structured payments. Journalists are annoying because they bias readers against Arsenal with their peculiar reporting. They always mention structured payments in relation to us to further the narrative that we are cheap and out of our depth.

I think probably the more interesting discussion in football is financing. What are the actual financing structures that teams are taking for these deals? Aside from coronavirus, teams have predictable and growing revenue streams. Based on this, they should be able to raise significant amounts of debt. We’d be able to find a variety of banks and fund managers who would like the financial profile

I was initially thinking along these lines as a loan option in Jan, but then it could take him the rest of the season to adapt as he has never played outside La Liga, let alone the PL - same also applies if we were to sign Aouar & Ligue 1. The upside to signing Aouar over a short term loan for Isco would be that Aouar should be in a position to hit the ground running next season.

The payment structure reported re Pepe was that we used a 3rd party financial broker to pay Lille, whilst we then repay the broker less up front thatn Lille wanted, but at a higher annual payment rate that fits within our pre-COVID revenues.

This is very much against our established financial structure regarding transfers, which is based around self sustainability and zero debt other than in regards to the stadium, which is both an asset and part of the club infrastructure, which is used to offset FFP criteria.

EDIT - as you will be aware I have been critical of our financial structures for a number of years - almost as long as I have been critical of AW.

Which is exactly what we should’ve been doing all along. The key with these things is you can get an enormous spread on these financing schemes depending on how you structure the principle and how the financier sources the funds. Over and above your own peculiarities

Agreed - hence why I have no time for the 'financial restrictions' excuses after the move. It's also why I've said previously we didn't need a war chest, just to use our own revenues more effectively. That IMO is no longer the case and we need major surgery to the team to make effective changes, and to do so WILL require substantial additional funding to be provided even if we were to still then pursue such 3rd party financing of transfer deals.

Any such 'restrictions' were of our own making and failed to use our improved revenues effectively, just as there wasn't a cohesive team building and/or transfer strategy as a result. IMO the club and AW used the 'financial restrictions' as as excuse to hide behind regrading both a lack of ambition and a desire to simply maintain the status quo on and off the pitch. We became the typical complacent, bloated fat cat.

Arsenal are ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign wantaway Inter Milan midfielder Christian Eriksen, according to reports in Italy.

Inter chiefs confirmed last month former Tottenham star Eriksen would like to leave San Siro after a disastrous first year with the club.

The 28-year-old has never found his feet under manager Antonio Conte but may be handed a lifeline in the form of a return to the Premier League.

United and Arsenal are both interested, while the Gunners hold the advantage as they may strike a swap deal for Eriksen which sees Granit Xhaka move to Inter, according to Corriere dello Sport .

The report adds the Serie A giants are keen on Xhaka, who is currently suspended after grabbing Ashley Westwood by the throat during Arsenal's 1-0 defeat to Burnley earlier this month.
