The release clause is with La Liga and Atletico doesn't have any say in the matter.
My guess is we walked away from the negotiations with Atletico once it became apparent they were not going to negotiate.
They said it was the release clause or nothing so we waited until the last day to do so as there was no longer any need to do so sooner.
