I'm sort of glad Partey got injured during out shit spell. Even when he played against Spurs it felt like too much was revolving around him. We were doing weird things with the line ups and the shape of the team too.

Hopefully now it won't feel as forced and he can settle into a more stable team and role. I still can't work out who the best partner will be for him or the team, it's probably one of those you need to see to believe. Him and Ceballos feels the most exciting, but could limit his ability to roam forward.

Regardless, can't wait to see him back on the pitch.

ESR is a 10. Not a twin CM. He didn’t defend at Huddersfield. Strictly attacked. We need 2 behind him. Partey plus one. Ceballos is interesting but Elneny might be the place to start.

ESR is very much a 10, he'll drop back to help out but he's much more of a 10 than most modern AMs. I really think with him at 10, Partey at 8 and sign a proper 6 we'd have a complete and balanced midfield for the first time in years.

What's the difference between an 8 and a 6?

For me Partey is a proper CM that can do it all, we shouldn't bind him by giving him a dedicated attacking/defending role.

We also shouldn't give him a loose role that does a disservice to his abilities. He's a naturally defensive player with insane ball recovery skills. We should let him do that.

Sounds like you agree then. 6 has a dedicated defending role, 10 has a dedicated attacking role, 8 is Partey (in the Qwiss suggestion).

In reality, the modern game has 8/10s and 6/8s, rather than traditional "dedicated" roles. Partey is the quintessential exponent of the 6/8.

Your calls for Bissouma might make sense. Stick him in there and let Partey and Saka roam free. Anyone come towards the halfway line, let Bissouma hack them

Keep Saka where he is on the right. The 4231 / 433 works well when you have one skilled creator on one wing and one finisher on the other wing. Saka right and Auba/Martinelli right.

This guys base level is so good. Him and Granit looked like a real solid midfield too. Would still like to see what he and Dani can do.

I like how he finds an angle to pass the ball forward no matter what. That's the mentality you need to have. A few yards here, a few yards there. Just work it forward and do it quickly until there's an opening. Most other midfielders we have turn around at the first instance of getting pressed instead and it makes us so predictable.

The advantage he have over all our other CMs is that he have this quick acceleration and turn to get away from his marker to have that space to pick the forward pass he wants. And boy does he love to pass forward.

He has that suppleness that lets him change angles easily, you get the sense that even if Xhaka sees openings he's just to slow with his feet to execute the pass.
