I don't think it has been well handled, but I think the idea it was "just" about a late arrival is unclear.
As Voltaire wrote, "Dans ce pays-ci, il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un amiral pour encourager les autres"... the point is, though, that executions should only be carried out from time to time ...
I don't really mind this stuff provided it brings out performances and results. The bad feeling I've got at the moment is due to lacklustre results and a looming scoring crisis.
We've got so little football this season and only one objective to fight for. Morale on this jaunt to Dubai could make or break the run at top four so I hope Doctor Arteta has his bedside manner sorted.
And while it worked for France for a while, my fear is we're already past the French Revolution and have entered our 18th Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte, where it's all become a bit of a parody and the executions have become a force of habit, motivating no one anymore.
Let's not forget that Auba is not the first case of a player being banished for something, Arteta has made an example of plenty of players, and what worries me the most is that not a single one of the guys he doesn't like has gotten a fair chance at redemption, Douzi was pretty much gone instantly, it's looking increasingly likely Saliba will never play a game for us, AMN played well when he did and is now gone, Pépé's done reasonably well from the bench and still doesn't get minutes .. It just seems he's doing all that disciplinarian flexing to make a point rather than improve the team on the pitch.
At the end of the day the squad still seems to be behind him though, and they know a lot more than me, so as long as he's got that going for him and the results improve I will give him the benefit of the doubt, as I said before. It's just a lot harder to root for an underperforming manager when he's being a bit of a prick on top of it all.
