I'm a bit hesitant to offer judgement here about the specifics. It's pretty obvious this goes beyond the current incident.

If Aubameyang couldn't play because he chose to come back a day later than planned that may not be acceptable, it really depends how serious things are with his mum and the other aspects. I don't feel like we've got all the information.

The public response though is hamfisted and punitive, destroying a worthwhile player's relationship with the club at a sensitive time. It's bad juju and even if the situation is somehow managed crisply and perfectly from here, which seems highly unlikely, I have no idea how it can be turned into a positive.

Except for the dodgy use of the term juju this is the most reasonable take you can have towards the situation. Auba has been late in the past so I wouldn't buy everything he puts out as an excuse. On the other hand if his reasons are as given and his mother is ill and he's needed to visit he should definitely get a pass or at worst a fine. We simply don't know.

What we do know however is that Arteta decided to make it public and embarrass the whole club in the process, both by virtue of shining a light on internal issues and on how different the club treats its employees, and more importantly burns yet another asset of the club. Even if Arteta is a piece of shit (and he most definitely is one) on a human level, he's ruining the club's chances of getting performances or value on the market for his players.

Every time there's an issue he goes public and definitive with it, be it with Pepe who he's shown to dislike, Saliba who he blatantly gave the cold shoulder to from day one, Guendouzi who was banished, AMN who's not allowed to leave or play and the club captain now. And his superiors sit on their thumbs and keep giving him as much money and time as he wants. We turned into an absolute joke of a club, even the days of getting smashed away at any big team (not that we stopped doing that mind) weren't nearly as bad as this. I don't care what anyone says, this isn't fans getting embarrassed with their club this is us turning against it. Arteta needs to go.

Aubameyang turned up late to the NLD. The NLD. I would’ve stripped him of the captaincy then. Yet you have people seriously trying to defend a 32 year old who can’t manage his time properly or care enough to act professionally. How many of us can turn up to work late time and again and expect to still be in a job? Let alone whilst getting paid a king’s ransom every week for the privilege.

Aubameyang has been a good player for us and scored a few goals, but he’s not bigger than the club and he has 100% deserved his punishment. About time we saw some accountability at this club, where a culture of unprofessionalism, casualness and lack of seriousness has been allowed to fester for too long.

Apparently (according to Ornstein latest article this AM) we don’t have a ‘captain’s message’ in the March day programme anymore because Auba is too unreliable.

First time in our history this has happened. Again sums up the unprofessional nature of Auba. Worst captain we’ve ever had on par with Gallas.

Yeah there are too many around, completely oblivious or ignorant to how they're seen most of the time too. Always have one or two noisy cheerleaders around too.

Unfortunately their backing usually ends up holding up for longer than you should reasonably expect.

What it's really about is deflection though. Auba is turned into a convenient scapegoat to blame our problems on and move the focus away from the fact that the football is shit and the results are the worst in our modern history. It's been like this with Arteta since he took over. When the going gets tough it's always because the players aren't doing what they're supposed to, not because the manager is useless.

I don't think it makes a single shred of difference. And I think this situation with Aubameyang has been coming for a long time.

I doubt it. Having watched the Tottenham one I imagine the club has a big editorial influence, so we'll see this portrayed in a way the club wants us to see it portrayed, and it will probably be minimised.

Definitely think he'll play up the big man more when the cameras are around though. Absolutely full of his own shite.

Said something along these lines at work today, that it's another version of smoke and mirrors to distract from the performance issues.

I'm half expecting him to reinstate Xhaka at least for the remainder of the season (unless he departs in Jan), and in some way I hope he does and it becomes the tipping point with the Home supporters. Would be quite ironic if the solution to the smoke and mirrors becomes an even bigger issue.

This discussion is at risk of becoming Arteta vs Auba when it doesn't need to. Auba isn't a good captain, his form for the past 12 months has been poor and I wouldn't be sorry to see him go. He's got plenty of priors and deserves this.

However, Arteta has plenty of priors too. He's once again poured fuel to a fire and destroyed any potential value we could get from cashing on Auba. We probably wouldn't have got much for Auba to begin with but this guarantees that we'll be stuck with him till the end of the contract unless we split some costs. Maybe some find this approach refreshing compared to Wenger keeping his cards close and not revealing any information. I don't.

We were never getting a penny for Aubameyang the moment we gave him a £350,000 a week contract at 30 years of age.

Then we're just going to have a stink that won't go away for another 18 months who will spend most of it snipping on social media. It's Ozil all over again. Couple this with the other players (like Pepe and AMN) whose values we've steadily eroded shows to me that we don't particularly know what we're doing here.

My point is there's a smarter way to deal with this
