Most of the differences you guys are talking about are down to quality and the system working better, not down to any fundamental difference in their approach to the game.

There was a moment where they won the ball at the half way line and instantly played a first time pass in behind for Mane to run into. Mane was positioned perfectly and ready to make the run, and the guy on the ball knew it.

Here the guy on the ball will either pass it to a nearby teammate, happy to just regain possession, or take a touch, or look up for a run, while Willian or even Auba will come short or make the run a fraction too late. The understanding of the system isn't there and it makes all the difference. Everything here is forced and accompanied by hesitation and thought, at Liverpool they just know what to do.

I'm hoping it's because Arteta hasn't had as much time as Klopp to build that know how in the squad, rather than him simply not knowing how to.

Well I'm utterly depressed now.

Why can our lot not grasp the extremely basic concept of movement and showing for the ball? What's wrong with them? Is it purely a lack of training?

it's highly frustrating because I was reading yesterday about how Robertson is the best left back in the world. He does this and that. And I would take Tierney every single day of the week over Robertson. And TAA - for all his lovely crossing and free kicks - all of his defensive heavy lifting is done for him by those three midfield workhorses in the second wall of the press. He couldn't defend his honor. Jota has 8 goals. How many goals do you think Aubameyang would have playing in Mané's wide left position. Exact same role we complain about now. He'd be on 8 or so probably for the season by now, feasting no overloads. Meh!

Everything we said is actually down to the fundamental approach to the game. Arteta entire approach is based on safety first and being solid, hard to beat. Wingers defend and help the fullbacks, if need be fall back to 5 man defence and have the wingers as wide defensive mid. Klopp's team pushes high up, wingers don't come back to defend in general, always ready to attack and wait for long balls. Both our tactics are vastly different, not just down to player's quality.

I am firmly in the camp that a coach style in a team won't take more than 2-3 months to implement. By then it is always easy to see the identity of the team. Klopp for example, right from the get go you know Liverpool have been transformed to a gegenpressing team or whatever. The fact that they concede stupid goals through Mignolet or Skrtel doesn't matter, the philosophy is clear. Same for Rodgers at Leicester, Bielsa at Leeds, Pep's first season at City etc.

I think it's not a coincidence Arteta got so many draws when he first took over before covid. Subsequently he worked his magic after covid especially in Cup football and made us very hard to beat, and that is still true for now. Whenever we want to defend we really looked organised and don't concede stupid goals. He just have to find his way to coach us into scoring goals, but that's easier said than done. Coaching a team to attack is much harder than just defend. It doesn't help that all his coaches is famous for organising team structure and disciplined football.

What was our approach against United? Or Leicester? If anything we probably played more aggressively against Leicester than Liverpool did last night.

There's obviously going to be slight differences in approach, the system and philosophy, Arteta may be more pragmatic etc.

The fundamentals I'm talking about is that it's all about working patterns, overloads, players being positioned in certain areas, using the fullbacks and wide areas to attack etc. The point being is that people accuse us of being robotic, having predictable patterns, lacking creativity and artistry etc, but Liverpool are much the same. If anything they're even more robotic in their machine line efficiency.

Go back and watch what Emery and Simeone did against Liverpool. They both vacated the wide areas, let them have it and just crowded the middle. It worked for Emery for half a game and it worked for Atletico. Liverpool in both games looked predicable, just flinging in cross after cross into a bunch of bodies in the box.

klopp was a seasoned league winning champions league finalist manager when he was hired by liverpool. the man knew what he wanted to do and from experience that it works. arteta is at the mainz, trying to figure out what works.
