They were on a 4 game losing streak when they met us but they had beaten Liverpool before that so pundits were still shiting on about how great Parker was.

Yeah, that was me.

There was a time not too long after Christmas when they changed to a younger lineup. A lot of their play was quite enterprising and inventive because of it. I can’t remember exact results but they had a string of decent performances. It looked like they were turning their season around (sounds familiar), but then they hit a wall and couldn’t turn good performances into good results and lost games they should’ve been getting points out of. Spurs and Wolves especially were tough losses for them.

yes but Villa is below us in the table to she can't be that much better than Leno. Or whatever that logic was.

It was keepers don’t contribute much to a league season. Unless you’re competing for a title, it’s really not worth getting your knickers in a knot over this or that goalkeeper. The spread between the top 10 goalies in the league is probably about ₆ points over the season

I beg to differ, twice in the past four seasons we have missed out on the CL by just 1 point.

That’s an interesting point. I wonder how we would’ve done if instead of spending our whole summer budget on Cech, Wenger didn’t send Martinez out on loan for the thousandth time. Could’ve been the difference between pipping Leicester to the title and finishing second.

It’s a shame Emery threw 20 mill at Leno too, he mustn’t’ve been told that Martinez was on the books. How many points did we miss out on the CL that season? One or two?

Couple of amateurish mistakes by some experienced managers.

I don't think you'll find a person on this forum who doesn't think we should've spent some money the summer we only got Cech.

Was a hilarious mistake. We did have one summer where we only got Lehman. But we had a ridiculous team at that point and he was just the cherry on top.

The Cech season would have been the perfect experiment for the importance of a keeper given there were no other significant changes to the squad. I remember the argument at the time was that he'd give us an extra 6-10 points and thus making us potential title challengers. In the end he ended up being thoroughly average and we lost points on the season before.
