He already proved at United that he needs time and space that doesn't exist in Premier League in order to perform. He'll have a nice old time in leagues like Eredivise and Ligue 1 and he'll probably flop again if we pick him up.
Zaha failed and then shredded the league after. Di Maria failed and he's world class on his day. United were playing long ball tactics. Even on crosses they were endlessly looking for the back post rather than the clever cross. It was a difficult team to play for. Martial has been really inconsistent there aswell.
I think they were failing for different reasons though, that's what I got from watching them back then. Di Maria had motivational issues after realising what a houseboat club he had signed for and Zaha as you say was done in by their tactics, and I don't think it helped that he was really immature as a person back then either. He needed to grow up a bit.
Memphis by contrast always got plenty of ball, he just couldn't do anything with it because defenders in England actually press ball-carrying forwards. He would look like a complete dick every league game. Then they'd get drawn against Club Brügge in Champions League, there would be acres of space, and Depay would walk away with a MOTM performance where he dribbled people for fun. All the classic signs of a shitster who isn't good enough to perform on the highest level and is too stubborn to change his game.
I haven't seen anything from Lyon this season, but I watched them a couple of times last year and I thought the same thing was true then. He's still the exact same player he was at United, it's just that Ligue 1 is a little bit houseboat. You wouldn't think so with all the great defenders coming out of there recently but I guess that's why they're all leaving. Lacazette had this issue too, he got all the time and space in the world, which is why he'd score boatloads in France but has never managed more than 14 league goals in a season in England. I've never rated Laca much but I think he was at least twice the player Memphis is back when we signed him.
Now Depay is 26, going on 27, just had an ACL, and he's coming here to replace the best forward we've had since Thierry Henry? I don't think so. This is the kind of signing that, if it actually happens, makes you wish ill on Raul and Edu.
