We gotta stop settling for bad players just because they aren't worse than what we already have. Stocking up on players on this level, who are either too old or not good enough or don't fit or haven't got any fire left, is the reason we are where we are. Agree, can't just sign players because they're better than what we have. If we want to build a functional side under Arteta then we need to get rid of those who won't work under him and sign players who will. It has to be a long term plan to build the team up over 2/3 years not just sign any high profile player we can get our hands on.

Coutinho strikes me as a player who won't work under him, then again I am biased because I've never been his biggest fan...

Guys it’s CL or bust next season. We need to get CL next year by hook or by crook. We can’t gamble on ‘project players’ or players that will come good in 2023. Therefore, some of our signings will be relatively short-termist to reflect this ie Willian. Also, it is no surprise we are going for experienced and proven in the Premiership players either who can hit the ground running (for the reason I mentioned). No time to waste next season.

Coutinho is not good enough to get us into CL, that's the thing. Get a proper player and we'll have a chance.

I might have said something positive very early on when he came through at Inter and looked like a promising central midfielder. I genuinely can't think of even one compliment I've paid him in the last 6-7 years though. If I really did I was obviously off my rocker at the time.

I agree. We will improve with him to maybe 5th but the improvement won't be enough for top 4 IMO.

But between him and no one coming in the choice is easy don't you think, especially on loan

Nor can it just be a play for next season only. We need a sustainable plan. United and Chelsea will spend and eventually get it right, Liverpool did after years of throwing away money. It's tight at the top. We could fall out of top 4 again. Getting into CL by hook or by crook can't be our strategy.

I have been fond of neither Willian nor Coutinho. The former is at least versatile and extremely hard working. Coutinho is not a wide player in my opinion. He has his use behind the forward. Signing just one of them may be fine, but both is criminal.

He was at Bayern training yesterday. Seems inconceivable that they’d allow him half a day before a CL game to travel to London. It’s not like it is deadline day.

There's no way it should have to be a choice between Coutinho and no one though. I don't accept that.

If we need to raise money we have plenty of value tied up in players who are of limited use to the first team. I can't imagine it's too difficult to flip guys like Lacazette and Bellerin and Torreira this summer. Guendouzi too. Even if we sell them for well below market value there has to be more than £100 million in those four, and on most match days you wouldn't even realise they're gone.

There is value, and the choice isn't between Coutinho and no one, but I'm assuming the options you want instead of Coutinho cost more than him, whoever they are. So even with selling players the choice is still Coutinho plus midfielder X (let's say that it's Partey) or a more expensive Coutinho option + a less expensive midfielder than Partey.

Coutinho should only ever be brought in as a bonus rather than as part of our transfer plans. If we can use their desperation to squeeze the overall cost down to under 10m, it may just about be worth it.
