It does, but I just have to believe that Saliba + whoever plays beside him is a better pairing than any of the ones we've tried this season.

Saliba - Luiz will be good enough. Great will be when we upgrade the Brazilian troll doll.
Ideally that Ceballos-Partey midfield has a third - an upgrade on Willock to give us more movement upfield.

A teenage Saliba has to be greater than or equal to Mustafi+Kolasinac for us to achieve basically the same thing next season as this one. We need a CB even if we do frequently play 3 atb.

We need better players everywhere, but we'll have to make do with what we've got in most cases, that's just the reality of being a midtable team with no one to bankroll them.

The next season will be huge for players like Saliba and Nketiah, but we have to give them the chance now. We don't have the money to sign proven starting quality in their stead, and signing also-rans that would end up stealing minutes from them is pointless and just sets the project back further.

Pretty much. If we want Willian, use Nelson instead, if we want Coutinho, recall ESR instead. Spend the money on proper players.

Willian is just taking away money from a squad piece on the path to the title. It’s an opportunity cost. Not worth it. We have enough old men hanging around.

I've never been a fan of Willian and don't want us going down the route of signing average old men, but I was watching him the other day and if we can't sign a proper winger this year then maybe a 2+1yr style contract might make sense?

First, we need depth. Martinelli is probably out till 2021 which leaves us with Saka, Nelson and Pepe and maybe Auba if Laca sticks around, and two (potentially three depending on Saka) could be off to ACON if that happens. We've already got 3 really promising young players so if you want to avoid killing them someone of the profile of Willian makes sense.

Second, he keeps and carries the ball better and more consistently than any of our wide players by a huge margin, so he will be adding something. In a window where we have no money, committing 10-15m on wages over the next 2-3 years isn't that big a deal.

If we absolutely need some depth.. At least do not sign both of these guys.

You might be able to sign Buendia for little more than the Coutinho loan fee. Surrounded by better players, he should do better and appreciate in value. There is really no reason to be signing these geezers

If you sign some players + use Nelson and ESR or sign players + Willian and Coutinho, the players in the latter scenario will have to be cheaper than in the first. So while it's relying on youth, it's relying that youth players can step in as backups and that the extra budget from not signing Coutinho and Willian will help get better starting players.
