The money we are probably providing up front on Gabriel would not be enough to meet Partey's release clause.

Atleti are his main alternative. Im assuming theyre offering in the low six figures to renew. If we're to entice him to join a work in progress team that hasnt been in the CL for 4 years, we have to stump some serious coin

Yep, he hasn’t been signing a new deal over there, and it’s likely because of what we’re offering him here. It’s almost certainly £150k+ incentives.

You pay him not in relation to his current salary but in relation to what important players at Arsenal are paid. I think in that sense £160k is perfectly reasonable considering we all think he'd be one of the key men in the team if we got him.

Probably means we have chosen not to bid as we don't think a bit within our means would suffice. Quite disappointing. Makes landing Ceballos even more important and probably puts Arteta's plan to play a 433 on hold for at least one season.

All the economics around this were always going to be tough for us. Nobody else is participating. Atletico will call us if they are interested and want to take one of our players.

This transfer always seemed very unlikely to me. If we ever intended to pay the release clause we would have just done it, but it's plain that we don't have the finances to pay that in one go. Think our strategy right now has to be to secure another loan for Ceballos and then get someone like Buendia in, if Norwich won't ask for too much money. I'd be happy with that midfield personally.

Not surprised why we are linked to other alternatives like Soumare which actually is more realistic for us

Cash is king, god. If these guys are asking for €50m up front and we then need to splash another €7m on the guy this year, it becomes unbearable. You don't cut €3m in headcount when there's cash everywhere.

I think what Claud means is that it's just not usually a worthwhile exercise if all you save is £3m - particularly in a business where flipping even unwanted assets for twice or thrice that amount is child's play.

We have plenty of assets to offload. I don't think us closing 1 blue chip deal is as crazy as is being made out
