When it starts affecting my footie, it’s a problem.

Serie A games canceled today, including Juve v Inter.

What do we know about this virus?

What don’t we know?

I want to panic. Is it okay to panic?

I want to prepare. How do I prepare?

Hearing there’s about a 98% survival chance. Those are great odds. Should we just ignore the noise, and go on with our lives?

The more it goes, the more it looks like a very very serious flu that is really only deadly for older people with underlying illnesses.

This is going to have a big impact on the Serie A race and going to be unfair for teams like Inter. They are going to have to play Napoli, Juve, and Atalanta in 9 days.

Juventus demanding to make $$$ from tickets is what led to the cancellation. Inter played in an empty stadium vs. Ludogorets just a couple of days ago. Serie B games aren't being canceled in the same region as well.

The euros and the olympics may also be in flux if this continues to get worse.

What's the situation from Singapore? I have friends in the city who are full of praise for the way the gov handled the situation.

Meanwhile I don't think Europe is taking it particularly seriously. Of course I understand the relative impact of the virus on a city state vs a country is markedly different but still.

They delayed the China visitors ban about 1 week too late which added to the problem but since then it's mostly positive. The gov raised the code to orange which meant no large groups gathering and no shaking of hands etc physical contact which is the main mode of infection among asymptomatic patients. They also spent a lot of effort on contact tracing which really helps a lot, but big country it's almost impossible to do that. Since then the spread is much slower and more than 70% of the patients has recovered.

I don't know how a big city like Milan or Korea is going to contain it other than developing a vaccine for it. It's more contagious than flu which is the problem.

Genetic analysis suggesting a coronavirus mutation has been in the wild in Washington State for the past six weeks or so

There's been one or two cases through the ICU in Darwin who were evacuees from the Diamond Princess. One of them was flown to Perth when his condition got worse and died overnight.

Have to give credit to the Chinese population (not government) for so readily accepting and upholding quarantines. That's certainly helped slow the spread of the disease, and it's why this hasn't reached heightened pandemic levels.

Yeah, I mean, I don't think there's much of a choice. I just feel for them.

And that they themselves are afraid to go out too. The disease is no joke in China because the hospitals are packed so you won't get treatment, just left to die. Businesses are mostly closed too so why would they leave home

There was the first confirmed case in NZ over the weekend - someone returning from Iran who had transited via Bali. People then panicked and cleared supermarket shelves etc. At work we're being told to take laptops home just in case the office has to close without warning.

My brother lives in Hong Kong and has been stuck working from home for about 5 weeks as his office had been closed.

If over 200 people are dead in Iran as has been reported, that means conservatively thousands of people are infected.

Yep - the disease has a roughly 3% fatality rate, which indicates 6-7,000 people infected.

Why not the government? I'm 100% certain this pandemic would've reached worse levels by now if it had broken out elsewhere looking at the responses and preparations (or rather lack of them). Imagining hundreds of thousands infected in the hopelessly overcrowded privatised German hospitals is genuinely cringe inducing. Or an absolute curfew like in Hubei but in rural USA. There'd be a civil war by now

I mean they did suppress the outbreak for around 2-3 weeks and silence the whistle blower doctor who first alerted others over the outbreak. Since it became a priority for the state machinery, they've done well to curb the rate of infection. Although of course I will always question whether the tactics and power wielded to make it happen should reside with the government in the first place.
