Jones, much of your analytics team doesn’t need to have background in your field. You know that. You need to fill it out with analysts and translators. Do you understand model building and data science first and foremost? That’s a skill that can translate anywhere. The problem is the football people don’t know anything about football
I wrote a lengthy post about it once I recall to which you responded too. Yes I understand data science enough to know that it can be a very valuable tool. Filling data bases with long term information on player fitness is certainly a great idea. Using those to augment your decisionmaking basis for your recruitment policy and current squad management is also very reasonable. Having that software make a decision for you is insane and idiotic, and from all accounts that's where statDNA is going wrong - I've read several times that Rosenfeld himself was involved in the recruitment process. How on earth is that a good idea?
You don't need some McKinsey prick at the club for years for stuff like this, you need a bunch of IT guys with some SQL experience who can reliably fix your input and obviously football people who are smart enough to accurately weigh the information. It's not rocket science, it's just a large amount of data for which you need the relevant personnel to which the CEO of a company with zero football background positively does not belong.
