Strong reports around that we have signed Flamengo CB, Pablo Mari.

26 years old, signed for Man City at 23 but never played for them; 3 seasons, 3 loans, signed for Flamengo last summer. Apparently Edu's close relationship with Flamengo made the deal easy. This would be an odd one to say the least, but, if true, Arteta must have liked what he saw of him at the City training ground.

Not exactly blown away. . . At this point I'm hoping there's nothing in it.

Looks like there's definitely legs to this story. We'll just have to hope Arteta knows a good defender when he sees one. Positives are he speaks English and has spent time in Manchester, even if he was loaned out in each of his three seasons.

Just looking at the comments on that Tweet and there seems to be a lot of very unhappy Flamengo fans. So there's that at least.

I haven't seen him play myself obviously, but I've read a lot about Jorge Jesus and his football revolution in Brazil, and Pablo Mari has been superb under him as near as I can tell. I've just been waiting for us to get linked to some Flamengo players this window considering the Edu connection.

I don't think that's an underwhelming link at all, and I'd rather take a punt on Mari than on bloody Boateng.

Done my ‘research’ and the overriding feeling is that he is good in the air and tough but is NOT a ‘pass it from the back’ Pique esque CB and apparently he is slow as fuck :-(

Never heard of this guy in my life and dont know what to make of it. However, my friend is a massive Flamengo fan so will be getting this thoughts and will post them on here when I do.

It looks like that Ukrainian CB is getting more rave reviews though.

Getting excited about this. It's been a long time since we pulled a good signing completely out of the left field. I really hope the guy is good. This could end up being an inspired signing. I bet he's eager to prove himself in Europe too with the Euros right around the corner. There's still time for Spain to call him up if he does well.

This article says Man City inserted a buy-back clause and considered using it in January. And also that Pablo Mari was named best defender in South America last season.
