The only way to not be a bit wasteful is to not buy players, which always requires overpaying someone - whether the other club, the agent, or the player himself. The Marmoush signing for example would have really destroyed our wage scale.

Don Pacifico we make less revenue than the teams we are challenging, and are constantly ahead of most of them, while also spending less on wages.

It’s hard for me to look at that and say “wasteful”. Contrast with Chelsea, Spurs and United. How do we compare with those teams?

Claudius to be honest I didn't really mean wasteful. My main take-out was that if we want to substantiate our wage bill versus our revenue generated, we probably can't spend as freely as people would like.

It seems from various posts on club finances Coombs has a clear viewpoint that football club owners should be lighting their money on fire, as a point of general principle.

Don Pacifico I think you're missing something. Carrying debt or running losses isn't bad, and it's the owners' job to make up the difference, or why have billionaire owners?

Not too worried about the wages 53% is very healthy and even though we have renewals upcoming we should also be losing some heavy hitters (Partey, Zinchenko, Tierney, Jorginho and Jesus year after).

The club’s purpose has always been to be self-sufficient, make profits and have a strong balance sheet. This is great from a business stand point, but not from a competitive perspective when you have rivals who are willing to run at huge losses and spend whatever it takes to win. I don’t think there’s an appetite in the club to spend the type of money required to really confirm out title credentials. I think the appetite extends to top four consolidation and it ends there.

It's specifically forbidden by PSR and the other regulations, that's the main issue.

Obviously we don't care how much money KSE spaff around so long as they've got more where it came from.

We're all sometimes in favour of making an average signing to plug a gap that affects our competitiveness, but it's something we can only do some of the time, otherwise we're screwed.

That means sometimes we don't make the signing. However, we already heard we were "keeping our powder dry" last summer and now we're short on quality forwards this season. If we're given these reasons the club was late to act in the market at times, their test is when we come back round and spend decisively.

Those numbers do provide good context for why we've been keeping our powder dry. We can spend on a big forward, but if it's on a player we then want to replace (e.g. an aging Ollie Watkins), it becomes a bit of a disaster.

They don't at all. We have loads of room to add players. The powers that be just lack the will to push us over the line.

Stan funded us massively through Covid when we were out of Champions s Leapfue and trying to discard those awful players we accumulated. We pushed up against FFP limits those years

JazzG this result also excludes our summer sales and we'll be trimming the squad of big earners this summer (Jorginho, Partey, Tierney and Zinchenko). Our earnings this season should also be higher with the revised CL format (and hopefully us going further).

We're in good shape to give Saliba, Saka and Gabriel bumper contracts and spend big again.

Qwiss they did a massive investment last season. I think Arteta has spent a net 70m pounds per year in the last 3 seasons, which is decent.
The thing that stands out for me right now is we've had a lot of movement with Vinai and Edu. That is probably our biggest issue in doing deals. We could've sold Zinchenko now to Dortmund for example. But you need capacity to negotiate these deals

Qwiss we also have just had issues of not being in Europe. That was depriving us easily £100m a season. And made it harder to manage FFP

Claudius that was the boards fault. Over a decade of under investment and poor recruitment at club level. They played their little investment games limiting our value and picking off other investors. Are we supposed to be grateful that once they did a little to clean up their own mess?
