IMO our recruiting of both Emery and players has been based upon the objective to regain top4 utilising most of the current squad within the current contracts of the key players like PEA, Laca etc, with an emphasis on the attack rather than trying to fix the Defence which will require longer term planning and funding.
The problem was that the Head Coach was not on the same page in terms of his tactical approach, but they hoped to have enough quality in the team to have a better than average each way opportunity re top4/Europa.
