We had no shots at goal in the 1st half, and the goal scored in the 80th minute was our only shot on target.

Also 4 consecutive draws in all comps after leading in all 4 games.

Gotta say I think Tierney has looked poor the last couple of games.. Maybe taking time with Bellerín is the right way to go.

There was a cross early on in the game where we had both Martinelli and Pepe attacking the box and Tierney completely bottled it. Put too much power on it and it flew over to Maitland-Niles on the other flank instead who had to take it down, beat a man and then play it to Pepe, who tried to backheel it in between the legs of a defender but missed.

It's just one situation in isolation, but I reckon it would have been a different game with that early goal. I think he would have hit Martinelli with the cross if he had been match fit.

Aye, I think I remember that moment. We were fortunate to recycle the play. What do you think about the way Tierney connects with Saka? Lots of room for improvement there I think- either Tierney needs to work on more expansive passing angles or Saka needs to offer himself better. We miss Monreal in that respect. Early days however, and happy we have both.

Tierney's difficulties yesterday weren't due to Saka.
The FB had done his homework and knew Tierney would go left every time so didn't give him many crossing opportunities.
Tierney didn't have the skill to dribble past him and he simply stepped across his path when he tried the kick and run into space.
I think a more varied approach would've worked with Tierney crossing from deeper which would've drawn the FB out of his defensive line.

Ah I did notice that to an extent. I suppose he still has yet to showcase his variety, or to pick up the trade.

It is not a difficult skill but is a low percentage cross so should not be relied upon as our forwards are very poor at winning these balls.
I just thought it was worth trying yesterday as hardly any crosses were getting to their penalty box.

The average age of those 5 players is 21 years old. Why would you expect consistency?

Add to the fact that they nearly all of them made their debuts this season.

Expectations regarding all of them is simply too high. Then there's guys like Nelson, Willock, Guendouzi who are just as young.

I suspect it's a combo of youth and the number of formation changes Emery has been making from game to game. I've just posted an article in the formations thread that gives some numbers in terms of formations played and success for each.
