I've never advocated letting players leave on a free, quite the opposite since selling them would allow us to do more Auba and Pépé signings.

I’m not saying it’s right either, but the Kroenkes sanctioned losing high value assets on a free because it was deemed that it would help us get top four. They’ve done enough, it’s time for management to make sure they actually use our resources properly.

One thing I will say though is that I think United, Chelsea and even Leicester to an extent have shown how important a quality midfield is. It can carry a shit defence and make a fluid attack. Has to be where we invest this summer.

I don’t know if you’ve ever looked at networking diagrams applied to football Passing pattens. A midfield with good playmakers makes the entire team click. We need those kinds of integrators on the field to bring everyone closer.

I do think a defender too could affect the entire team indirectly as a consequence of what you're saying. Currently our defenders are so bad we need one extra CB to not leak like a sieve, and that means one midfielder gone from the XI. I agree that the big bucks (if we can call whatever we'll spend that) need to be spent in midfield though.

Again more English bias. Was reading the Mirror awards. And the journalists were giving everything to Henderson and Lampard. What has Lampard done other than what’s expected given his team? And this Henderson praise is just more of the typical you need a hardworking Englishman stereotype that leads to Arsenal being characterized as leaderless. KDB should sue for his award.

Lampard has done well. Got Top 4, got into a cup final. spent nothing to get there, gave debuts to like 9 academy players....good season for them.

Don't think most people expected Chelsea to get top 4 with the team he had at his disposal this summer. Not sure if any manager this season sticks out, so would probably would've just given it to Klopp for winning the title.

Klopp. And then Wilder and Nuno. Spurs and Arsenal shot themselves in the foot, and needed managerial changes. United plodded along until they spent a fortune on Bruno. And Leicester threw away top 4. Lampard did nothing exceptional. One eyed man reward.

To be honest at the start of the season if you read back the thread everyone was delighted Chelsea had transfer ban and a terribly weak squad. We were all positive about Emery 2nd season and with a United in turmoil as well top 4 was the easiest. It was still true points wise when you looked at it now. I mean nothing could be worse than his first season anyway... Oh well

I guess. Maybe what’s also happening is the top 2 are so doing so well that they make anything everyone else achieves look mediocre. So congrats to him. Such a wasted season by us. I think Mikel for a whole season gets us into Top 4.

What pains me more than making top 4 though is that we spent 2 years with the team in flux. If we’d had Mikel this whole time, we’d be well advanced in squad building regardless of our league position. Now we have the exact same squad issues we had when Wenger left. Wenger’s a guy who went from being able to build the Invincibles on a 15 to 16 man squad rotation to leaving us in a shambles. His book will be interesting

The bar for top four this season was incredibly low. Chelsea got 6 points fewer than last season and still got in, United managed to equal last year and moved up 3 places in the league, and it's certainly not because the overall standard has gone up.

We have just been really, really bad.

Wilder could have been in with a shout maybe. It was pretty impressive how a newly promoted Sheffield side was fighting for a CL spot right up until the last 6-7 games.

Most people thought Southampton would get relegated too but they nearly grabbed an EL spot. It's definitely not because they have a great squad. Hasenhüttl deserves a lot of credit for that, and you feel that Ings who ended on the same number of goals as Auba should have gotten a little more attention too on the player side.

This is nothing new though, most awards exist to wank over top clubs and have no other purpose. Football is useless at recognising achievement outside of those with excessive wealth.

That’s depressing, Goon. And now you see this haggling over Partey and wonder if we will quickly build the team that gets us on a path to compete for a title in 2-3 seasons. We need to be ruthlessly efficient this summer and get 30-40% of championship team building done.

Never, ever forget how much Emery fucked over this club. Useless git. I was watching some old highlights the other day and had forgotten how he played Torreira as a #10 for a few months.

You wonder how different things would have been if we got the Xhaka, Mustafi, Gabriel and Perez signings right. Our recruitment (and sales) over that period was atrocious and really has anchored the side down.

By 16/17 we could have realistically lined up with this team on pretty much the same budget, all players we were strongly linked with.

Would've considered Wilder if not for post corona, they really fell off a cliff and unless you've already secured your position like Liverpool that does matter a lot. Hasenhüttl is a good shout.
