My interpretation of the Maldini quote was that the fewer mistakes he makes, the fewer tackles he has to make and not that tackling is not important or necessary.
Big leap to connect it to "giving an excuse to our midfielders not to tackle".

Xabi Alonso said pretty much the same thing in an interview as Maldini. Obviously both have made loads of tackles, the point isn't that tackling is bad but that it should be a last resort measure, if you position yourself correctly in the first place you won't need to make a tackle. Anticipating where ball and players will be and getting there while on your two feet and being able to release it immediately instead of having to get up and losing precious seconds or even missing the ball altogether is always preferable, that's at least my reading of it.

This bit is the problem for me because it only really covers some of the scenarios a defender (or midfielder) would be faced with in any given 90 minutes. Positioning, anticipation and tackling are all equally important IMO.

They're all important but not equally in my opinion. When a defender makes a tackle it's a realistic scenario that he has to do it because a team mate lost it cheaply, but I reckon most of the time it's because he wasn't correctly positioned. To be fair though there are plenty of cases where a defender does nothing wrong and his team still concedes, sometimes even with his team mates not making any mistakes. Football favours the attacking team and always will.

Positioning is by far the most important trait in a defender anyway for me, although I count positioning and anticipation as one.

The point is that situations exist where you need to make a tackle without having made a mistake yourself, which contradicts what Alonso and Maldini say. It's just become one of those poetic sayings.

Not just that, it's more relevant to players and teams who are highly skilled and make very few errors in a game.

Our midfielders not only make a ton of defensive mistakes, they also don't make enough tackles to compensate. So it's lose/lose.

100%. That is why Per is so good in defence despite a lack of pace and why Mustafi is terrible.

freddie in as caretaker while we find a replacement tbh. we've got to the point where it's clear we're just wasting time the longer we persist. we've seen all of the coach's moves, and given him a reasonable amount of money and time. our fullbacks aren't going to come in and save the day, which i know some are holding out hope for. time to make a decision

It's the attack that bothers me. Our defenders aren't great but we should have some serious firepower offensively with, Pépé, Auba, Laca, Ceballos and apparently Saka. It doesn't look like it when we play though.

And that's 100% Emery's fault. He hasn't been able to impose any sort of style to our play and he has to go. He has zero upside if he's not winning games.

After last season I was keen on giving him another one, but personally I feel that we've regressed so I'm not as patient now. We'll see how it turns out I guess.

Last season I was constantly preaching patience with this guy. I was even hoping the summer would be invaluable in helping him craft an identity.
Rodgers has arrived mid season , found a distinctly defensive team and refashioned then as an attack-minded possession team that has delivered more points during his tenure than anyone but City and Pool. These are the benchmarks we judge Emery by. He has had more time and has better players. Yet we don’t seem to be going anywhere

It's too early to judge Rodgers' tenure. If he's still there at the end of the season I'll give him credit.

Don't think I care too much what's happening with Emery now. The issue for me is still the collapse in morale and performances in the closing stages of last season, which cost us a pretty easy snatch at Champions League qualification.

That was unacceptable and I don't think we've seen any conclusive evidence those issues won't reappear. It feels like Emery's grip on the squad is a bit weak and that bothers me.

It doesn't feel like we've shaken that off at all and our stats indicate much the same.

We're showing no statistical improvement and we're playing crap football.
Emery has failed to deliver on any of his claims re the style of football he wanted.
I want him gone before we decide to send Ozil off to purgatory for the remainder of the season.
