The whole "he's been handled perfectly and should be grateful to Arsenal" argument is just silly really.
No more silly than the argument that a kid whose playing opportunities while under contract with Arsenal have seen him lauded as one of the great defensive talents of his generation … hasn't been given adequate opportunities while under contract with Arsenal. Like I said, you see how this works.
We can go back to during last season and revisit the catastrophe posts about how Saliba would be refusing to rejoin Arsenal at this point if you like. As I said then, he was under a binding contract and he'd come back.
For me it's not really about whether Saliba should be "grateful" to Arsenal, although that's the situation I prefer with any Arsenal player. But unlike some, I'm not going to stretch the opposite point of view in order to villainise Arsenal and take sides against our club. I'll warm to Saliba if he signs a reasonable new contract, if he doesn't and turns wantaway, I'm not going to say it was because we were so wicked, cruel and mean to him, as opposed to it just being because of greed and ambition.
Saliba is 21 and becoming a starter at Arsenal, if people don't think that's worth something, doesn't represent an act of support and faith by this club … or worse yet, think that's somehow not adequate and a gross injustice … none of that tracks for me.
