The people are what make it work financially though. TV partners care about viewers and subscribers I'm not convinced it will lead to additional viewers in the long run and I'm not convinced the net gain in TV money will be particularly material.
The problem with having several big games every week is that they cease to be big games. Take away the stakes and they become even less interesting. They'd be gambling on making it huge from a global marketing perspective but I'm not sure how much they can really build on the CL.
Claud has it right, my guess is it's essentially about control. They'll either use the threat to leverage more power from UEFA like they did last time, or you'll get a closed competition much more akin to the CL than a Super League type format.
