Combined with Ceballos in midfield and it doubles the impact re ball retention and forcing opposition to stand off rather than being able to press a high line.

The Sané vs Pépé map is above. Pépé wins on take ons, shooting and chance creation, while Sane edges him on rigor, recovery and distribution. I prefer our man’s profile, but potentially Sané is blunted by his environment.

Distribution is pretty irrelvant when comparing to a player in another team because it's heavily predicated on the overall possession the team has. Sterling versus Sané would be a worthwhile conparison, but not to Pépé.

That's a damm good chart for Sterling actually. Pépé, weaker league notwithstanding (but also weaker team), still betters it overall though.

I spent hours lost on there once and I found that for all the players I had eyed myself it was extremely accurate to what I'd expect to see. And that is what gives me confidence in the way they collate the various statistics to come up with a score for each category.

William Saliba was off the charts compared to most other centrebacks, let alone young centrebacks. Ceballos scores extremely well too. I do think the club are using the same underlying statistics to help their recruitment. It's just a confirmation of what your eyes tells you.

Quite interesting to see both Sterling and Sane do quite well on 'rigour'. I'm assuming that's a trait of playing in a Pep side rather than a trait they both hold naturally.

Yeah. Listened to a good interview with the head of Tifo Football recently. He said that most scouts on similar platforms like Wyscout. Our own StatDNA is similar to WyScout with additional proprietary internal data added in for lifecycle management. So access to extensive data for scouts is easy, not the mystery it was during the moneyball era. Some of the key capabilities for teams then becomes understanding how that data translates to one’s own needs and extrapolating how a Saliba might develop.

I cannot stress enough my support for Raul’s approach vs Gazidis. If you want to succeed, you need to take risks like this. You need to sweat your assets. The conservative purchases we made in the last few years and would’ve risked making if we had gone the Fraser route would certainly doom us to mediocrity. With Pepe we might still fail, but we increase our chances of success significantly.

In their cases it's probably a combination of a little extra aggression demanded by Guardiola, but moreso the effect their swarming pressing game has on the opposition player trying to find a pass and getting caught on the ball.

News from that reliable Lille paper is that Lille will receive full cash payment up front of 75m euros.

We have gone through a finance company to make this happen, we will pay the finance company 80m over 5 years for this deal.

Very smart transfer.
