Lol at the Colombia instead of Chile/Inamoto errors.
It's what i deserve posting with one eye as i'm supposed to be working although i would argue that it doesn't dilute either point.

I'm always sceptical when club legends etc. are hired for a job. Since a person's capability is the most important aspect and I don't see the big benefits of having previously played for the club, I worry about whether said person was hired because he was the most capable guy or because he's been here before.

He was not our first choice if the Monchi reports are accurate. There were also a couple of other names linked who didn’t seem interested before we settled on Edu.

I have heard and read that Edu was the first choice, but we moved on to Monchi and sounded out Overmars because Edu at first didn't want to leave his position with Brazil, where his contract ran until 2022. Our persistence paid off I suppose.

I agree with Quincy generally; competence is what matters, but it's a big bonus if you find someone both extremely competent and with a big history at the club. Hopefully Edu is that man.

I'm surprised that no one has posted his goal against Celta Vigo yet. One of the best Arsenal goals I've seen:

I think having someone with a connection to the club helps, particularly in a role that requires someone to be there for the long term. It gives them some authority from the get go. Monchi and Sven are two guys with the biggest rep in the game for that sort of role and neither lasted long outside the place they made their name.

More than anything you need someone intelligent in there that understands football and you should be able to find someone from the 100's of players who've passed through here in the past 20 years.

Proper bizarre how Wenger moved away from bringing players like that to the club. Edu was a squadie yet is better than anything we currently have

Hopefully, when he starts talking to the fans and by the work that he does, Edu can bridge the divide somewhat between the people running the club and the fanbase. Restore a little faith and confidence.

He was used this way in Brazil. He often made squad announcements for coach. Maybe he can help be a bit of a fave on things. Emery won’t be that guy.
