So many occasions you see us move into a bit of space on the transition, perhaps from winning possession or from getting it clear from a corner, and instead of driving on and taking a risk, we'll turn inside or backwards, pause, and play the safe ball. It's an action you'd expect of a team wanting to kill a game and take the momentum out of it, not one you'd expect of a team what wants to be progressive and attack.
I'm not saying it should always be the forward pass, but by being conservative and keeping possession on these occasions all we do is let teams filter back and get into shape. We cannot at once moan about how deep teams sit and position themselves in front of us, and at the same time not look to exploit transitions and space. Working to get players into the space in these transitions is something we need to do better too, and I don't mean lumping it towards Havertz/Gyokeres and hoping they can do something with it out of nothing with no support around them.
