Look, I think Smith Rowe is a good player, but I also think Trossard is great, Vieira has serious potential and Nelson is a real wildcard. Not everyone can play and someone has to lose.

People bemoaning Smith Rowe's lack of minutes will be the first to criticise the club if we sidelined a 30m asset in Vieira or if we didn't use Nelson after handing him a contract.

It's a team sport. Some people as good as they are are rightly or wrongly sidelined for other players. As it stands, all three ahead of Smith Rowe have only strengthened their case. Even if Havertz falls by the wayside, Smith Rowe is still two players removed from the starting lineup.

It's no mystery why he doesn't play.

daredevil Nobody thinks it's a mystery..? Everyone can see that Arteta favours Havertz way more than Trossard and Vieira, who he again favours more than ESR.

Some disagree with that order, mostly the Havertz part. Vieira is more of a wildcard for now, difficult to judge if his recent sub performances represent his current level or if he's still the same Vieira from last season.

Claudius it sounds like you’re saying Arteta watches players in practice and then gives them a chance based on what he sees. As evidenced by his quotes there. Which makes sense. Again, Arteta sees these guys 25+ hours a week that we don’t, and squarely he’s using that information to guide his squad selection choices. It’s not just what we all see in games.

Well both yes and no. Explains why the players who are playing play, but doesn't explain why we stick with players who are clearly not performing at the required level and why some people who have been on fire get taken out of the team once certain favourites are back. Otherwise Havertz must be doing some amazing things in training, whilst the likes of Trossard are just fucking about waiting for the next game to begin.

I really don't know why we have to rehash these conversations though. Some people think Arteta picks players who are performing in training whether or not these players are performing in game time, others believe he has his favourites and is more flexible with certain players performance levels than he is with others. Regardless of which it is, even when they are trying their best to be fair, many managers have these blind spots for or against certain players, just as most people have their own when it comes to how they deal with other people. There's no shame in admitting it.

So do you think ESR is good enough to be played? If you do then would you agree that we should find ways of getting him on the field more often, even if just from the bench?

Smith Rowe was one of our best last time he actually got a run in the side, he's not a pleb.

I doubt he has a future here, but I did assume that after these injuries, he'd either be loaned or rotated with a view to capitalising on his great talents. We are playing across four competitions.

didnt feel like creating a new thread, but ive really grown to detest these constant international breaks. ruins the flow of the domestic season, and puts increased strain and stress on guys who are already playing too many games.

really hope some kind of major shakeup happens. the players need to push back against this nonsense.
