The most frustrating thing is that a typical player on Bennacer's level would have a price tag three times as large in today's market. We have to shop at Walmart this summer (and Stan doesn't even give us a discount) because we have limited funds, and we pass up an opportunity like this for £13 million. We could raise that tomorrow by shipping Elneny. He earns €350K at Empoli too, and I don't mean per week - he earns €350K annually. He's on like 6K per week. Bloke has zero wage demands to consider. I just don't get this club.

It's at best an arbitrage opportunity for a club with cash-flow issues. At worst it's a missed opportunity for an ill-equipped midfield. Anyway angle you view it from, it's crazy town.

Not to mention we spent so much educating his football here in his youth career.

We spend loads of effort to scout and get young talented players, educate them well but don't give them a proper chance here or on loan, sell them for peanuts and gain close to nothing when they get famous. It's infuriating.

It's not just infuriating it makes no fucking sense. I think Bennacer might get a little overrated at the moment because of his showing in Egypt but either way we have no money and he's definitely better than at least half our midfield

The club is in a stupor for some reason, people are way too comfortable and no one wants to rock the boat. No one making moves or trying to shift the deadwood, I'm not saying clear their lockers and key their cars but at least shop them around. Even Welbeck hasn't found a new club yet ffs, watch us resign him with a hefty loyalty sign on bonus like the retards we are

If we are getting Ceballos does it make sense to spend money on Bennacer? I remain unconvinced this is such an abominable decision and I'm not sure I see him skyrocketing to stardom.

Agreed.

Ceballos, Xhaka, Torreira, Guendouzi and Willock seems like a decent collection to me, do we really want to spend another 15m on a player we're clearly not convinced by?

Overpaid players like Welbeck and Jenkinson have shown that overpaid players like Ozil, Xhaka and Elneny are sticking with us till the end of their contracts as free transfers are the only way they can continue to earn more than their worth. As frustrating as it is for the club, it's understandable as all of us would do exactly the same (in their shoes).

barca overpay and lose money on transfers constantly. they probably see what hes given them so far and realize if they wait too long, they'll probably get £20m for him. hes 27 and isnt really that good, so either they can take a £130m loss (plus his wages) or try and at least get a chunk of it back.

i wouldnt want him here if he cost £30m.
