That's the most stupid thing in my opinion. Bernardo has complained that you can't joke between friends without being called a racist, but literally the only reason to put in on Twitter instead of a DM is so that other people can see it as well.

What Bernardo and Mendy tell each other in DMs isn't my business. When it's private the only thing that matters is what Mendy is okay with. When you do it in public there's also the matter of what other people think is okay. When you do it publicly just to show people what you're doing and then tell people to mind their own business, that I have a problem with.

What on earth are you doing, are you a journalist for The Sun who tries to bait me into giving you the headline QUINCY THINKS RACISM IS FINE?

I have friends who I don't mind making jokes in private to me about my Indian heritage - I even find them funny. If they wrote it on Facebook or to people who may not be okay with that, then my friends would be racist pricks. If you absolutely want to translate it into me being okay with racism, then do that and later maybe get a grip.

I find this whole affair very interesting. We love outrage. We always need to be outraged, especially on Twitter. But where am should our anger (if any) be directed. Bernardo appears to have grown up in a situation where Conguitos has normalised the consumption of nativist cartoons that portray blacks in a primitive way, big lips and a pot belly, not unlike imagery popularized during Crow or used in TinTin comic books (like Conguitos with the Congo connection).

I doubt Bernardo had ill intent, and that’s what his people are at pains to explain. Meanwhile you have a whole company whose logos can be weaponised against black people. Focus on that and educating them why their imagery might be offensive. One of the difficulties of racist imagery is that whites people are often completely unaware of what might be hurtful (some genuinely don’t know, some don’t care), and so you end up with a proactive reaction from black folk which is if you use imagery that might coney racist meaning I will assume you were being racist. That eliminates space for trolls and other argument. I guess we have to weigh any fallout from this against the benefits of eliminating daily incidental racism that folks face or feel.

All that is true but I asked the question as I disagreed with the two posts and think Bernardo Silva putting it in public shows his lack of awareness (ignorance if you want to be more pointed) but actually backs up his innocence as the clever (most dangerous) racists never post with the majority of the rest, I think, keeping it in DMs.

I don’t agree with your assertion that dangerous racists keep it in DMs. Trolls are always testing Reddit moderators. And then you have Trump in the White House talking about shooting Mexicans in the legs or feeding them to alligators when they cross the border. Racists are particularly safe online because they don’t have to deal with the consequences of their actions. But they’re also emboldened when the general environment is permissive as is the case with Trump’s rhetoric
