awooga83 Not sure I completely agree with your first point. Europeans still getting Russian oil but getting it via India instead and having to become reliant on LNG from America and Qatar. Since then I have seen no real political will to take future energy concerns seriously. We are bogged down in ideologies and bureaucracy about how we should meet our energy needs. This is a UK and EU wide problem.
I'm going off on a tangent here but was watching a podcast recently and learned that in South Korea they are spending around £7b to build a similar Nuclear Plant to the UK is at Hinkley point C (Hinkley is 3.2GW and the South Korean plant is 2.8GW) which is costing us nearly £50b. We could build nearly 7 plans for the same money and meet nearly 40% of our whole country's electricity needs. On top of that they are building them in half the time as well. I think that is absolutely scandalous how mismanaged things are here. If we can't build them ourselves get them in to build it for us, right now we are having to rely on the French anyway and South Korea aren't a hostile country like for example China who could probably build it even cheaper. This is somewhere the Labour government should have come in all guns blazing and would have shown them to be more serious than the Tories who completely fucked things up.
The energy point is important because I do feel this is one of the reasons why the US have got involved in Venezuela and now Iran, I think they are trying to choke off or at least control these supplies to China. Just as China have taken control of the rare earth minerals the US are trying to create their own leverage. Interesting read on it below, no idea if all his points are valid but he knowledgable when it comes to oil etc.
