Well, yeah but you can't credibly abandon your citizens in an unfamiliar country and in a city that's being locked down where you probably have limited embassy staff and curtailed movement. The only real option is to accept there's a risk and mitigate them - and it's not just European countries, Japan, India, Australia etc are all doing the same.

Besides, the virus has already spread internationally so one way or another it's going to reach most international cities within the next month.

If this virus gets to into countries with weaker health infrastructure there’s going to be big trouble.

Incidentally I know someone who was quarantined in China as part of a precautionary measure when SARS was a thing - he happened to be on the same flight as another passenger who tested positive. It's not a pleasant situation to be in.

Most of the govts in the world are bringing their citizens back because China is a dead town now. No food, nobody on the streets and hospital packed to the max.

This virus can't be controlled because you can be infected by someone perceived as healthy without any symptoms. It's a huge mess right now. Death rate is thankfully low for now.

Quite an extraordinary exclusive in the Washington Post last couple of hours, puts the Huawei headlines in the shade.

It's paywalled, but in short, the CIA owned the company that exported crypto machines to over 100 nations for use in secret state communications, and deliberately crippled its algorithms so they could expend a modest effort to decipher the cables.

the washington post is far from perfect, but its infinitely better than the new york times. i dropped my NYT sub years ago

The official updates from China have already been pretty distorted … first wildly under-reported, then instances of "double counting", so it's all very unclear. About all we know is at least 1000-2000 people have died.

Have to think if the virus did get into the Xinjiang detention system, we wouldn't hear much at all. I know if it were the Australian immigration detention system they'd tell us as little as possible about it.

I follow Alan Wong (@alanwongw) on Twitter and he's been a very good source for information throughout the corona spread. He works for some outlet called Inkstone News. They have done a lot of great reporting on the daily going ons in China and gotten reflections from people that are living in the middle of the epidemic.

When Peng Bangze, a food delivery driver, sent his father to a quarantine site in Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, he hoped the 59-year-old would get the treatment he needed.

The older man, a construction worker, fell ill on January 28. He was coughing, running a fever and having difficulty breathing. A CT scan showed he had infections in both lungs, Peng said.

On February 5, he was taken to the Sunny Sky Inn in Qiaokou district. The building had been converted into a temporary quarantine center. At that time, Peng said, community officers promised that his father would be tested for the coronavirus and looked after by doctors.

But no doctor was working at the site, Peng said. On February 8, Peng’s father stopped answering his phone calls. Two days later, Peng found his father in his hotel room unresponsive.

Makes sense why the full state PR machine wanted the world to focus on a hospital being built in 10 days - which is obviously very impressive but subsequently felt like an attempt to seize the narrative.

For sure. Most of these quarantine places are apparently locked down hotels and such, not medical facilities.
