I was on board with him when he was imposing a consistent, logical system on players that don't necessarily fit it, because it needs to be established and it has to be clear what kind of players we need moving forward. The system is basically an adaptable 4231/4222/433 that builds from deep, asks the FBs to overlap, and uses asymmetrical overloads, quick switches of play, and cutbacks from the byline.
What the hell happened? I know everyone got injured, but abandoning the entire philosophy seems borderline insane.
I am maintaining the belief that he made the decision to be more practical according to the personnel, which are not very good. Ozil is ineffectual regardless of where he plays, Ramsey is gone and was never really good enough anyway, so not playing them isn't what's doing my head in...it's the haphazard formations, like playing one old CB in the center with the other two pinned on either touchline, and expecting not to get ripped to shreds.
The circumstances are making me pretty hesitant to 'blame' Emery for all of this. I think there might be better ways to deal with it, but I'm honestly not certain that we'd be getting better results than we have.
Squad needs an overhaul. If he were doing this shit with a fit squad + a winger and a CB, then I'd be very concerned.
