Too few and far between although when we have clicked we've been scintillating.
We start out each game very structured, players hold positions. We really struggle to get going in an attacking sense and we're still leaking to many goals. In the second half but mainly the last 20 when the game opens up and our shape gets a a bit looser we look a lot better offensively. There was one game this season where ozil abandoned his position and worked some lovely combination play and was the only threat we had in that entire first half.
We need to learn how to be solid defensively and get better tatically at it. It seems clear we're using the first half to do that. It's a skill we need to develop if we want to stop being embarrassed against the top 6 and in the CL.
There's far less movement in the first halves it structed but with everyone pretty static theres not much for the number 10's to pick out.
IMO the #10s shouldn't need to be looking to pick runners or passes = that's not what this system is about.
AW's style was all about technical ability and intuitive play on and off the ball going forward and more so in the final 3rd.
Emery's system is all about using the flanks to provide width to stretch the defence rather than letting them stay compact and slide across. It's then also about creating numerical overloads on the flanks so as to either be able to get the FB in behind and to attack the by-line as we saw v Fulham, OR
to create space to be exploited to achieve the same end on the other flank as we saw v CFC.
As such the #10 isn't used as a playmaker but they are used to create those numerical overlaps out wide. The more important technical passing role is with the DLP in midfield who sets the tone and tempo, both in terms of spreading or switching the play, and/or passing between the lines.
