You'd hope that the whole point of the restructuring that the club has under gone over the past 12 months would mean that we're less reliant on the manager sticking around. Most modern managers have a short shelf life, no point even worrying about it.

Hopefully he does a good enough job for us that he’s courted by Real or Barca. Can’t imagine they’ll be after him if he has us lingering around 6th for any length of time.

He was burned by PSG. If I were him I'd be wary of those types of clubs in the future, especially if he wants to win the CL without kowtowing to the likes of Ramos or Pique. Would have to be the right situation, not some nonsense where the players tell on him if he makes them work too hard, or if they want to play a different formation.

The Arsenals, Liverpools, Citys, Napolis, Dortmunds, and even Old Ladys of this world are far better environments for managers than Real, Barca, Bayern, or PSG these days.

I'm still holding back my opinion on Emery, though I like what I see.

I'm just worried how long it'll take us to get out of being a second half team. We still haven't taken a lead into second half all season. Of course, if we win regardless...

Maybe we are a second half team on purpose. Although against Liverpool we have to show up in the first.

If anyone knows how to deal with Liverpool it's probably Don Unai. We all know what he did to Klopp's boys in the Europa league final 2 years ago.

Tbh this is the kind of improvements I was expecting, adapting the team to win and adding more energy to the side and less fear/anxiousness from the players and putting Arsenal first. Wenger would still be playing Ramsey saying how he hoped he would sign a contract and trying to fit in Wilshere somewhere in midfield, making 75 min subs to bring on Laca when we need a goal, and Elneny to hold the lead. I’m glad we didn’t go for Arteta though.

Depends, the latter four are still the ones you want to be at if you have any aspiration to win several trophies.

Doesn't change the fact that it's still a shit environment and Emery has first hand experience of it. Winning with those clubs is expected to the extent that often the manager will get little or no credit, and still get fired a as a thank you. Look an Enrique, the fucker had to take a national team job despite winning the treble with Barca. Unless you're a Pep and produce one of the best sides in memory, or a Zidane and win 3 consecutive CL's.

Oh sure, it's a shit environment but plenty of people choose to work in environments that are awful just because there is a short term upside. They then move to a more sensible job later on in their career. You'd hope Emery has been vaccinated based on his time at PSG but the appeal still holds depending on what his priorities are, plus being sacked by one of those clubs has become so common that it's barely even a career setback.

Maybe. I think the short term upside will appeal to those who need the career boost or those who will otherwise have no hope of winning the big trophies (like Emery at Sevilla). Otherwise the only appeal for me to leave a club like Liverpool, Arsenal etc. and take one of the very biggest jobs is if I backed myself to take them to another level and in the current climate that's no easy feat. But everyone's different.

On a different note, anyone remember that tweet from the guys suggesting it was a common tactic of Emery to go defensive, or "full Emery" to protect a lead and consequently throw away a game? I think he made the call before the PSG-Barca second leg.

I thought we saw a glimpse of that at Chelsea in the second half and feared the worst, but since then I have to say his changes have generally been very positive when we're ahead and we've looked much more willing to try and build on a lead than say in the latter days of Wenger. Maybe it's just in the big games.

Don't know when that tweet came but I thought it was bullshit. Barcelona PSG was a one off game, couple dodgy refereeing decisions and Neymar had one of the greatest CL performances in living memory, absolutely nothing to do with Emery or his tactics. He loses more games than he wins vs Barcelona or Madrid but who doesn't.

Similarly, Emery picked Lo Celso to play DM against Madrid - I think it was his full debut in the CL - and that backfired as well.

I don't think it's an issue though, that's just the price you pay with a manager who is willing to take risks - sometimes they pay off, like Xhaka this week and sometimes they'll backfire. As long as the net impact is positive, there's nothing to wrry about.

Which is why that tweet is bullshit - Lo Celso didn't work out just as the whole team was poor vs Madrid but it sure as shit wasn't him throwing a game away because of negative tactics.
