The objective is well-known. You can't field a team with the view that it'll improve in the long term when you need short-term improvement; that's insane. You play the team that is most likely to give you results out of the squad at your disposal, and if you get into Champions League you can start replacing players to your liking.
Mourinho on his part was done with Pogba at the start of the season, and I think a lot of people were on his side initially because it's sometimes easier to attack class when it's not quite living up to expectations than it is to tear into lesser players who work hard. You see right now just how pigheaded José was though. I think Pogba's got 10 goals and 6-8 assist in the two months since Solskjaer took over. He and Rashford both put in MOTM performances regularly and it has carried them back into the top four. When Mourinho got sacked they were 10 points behind us.
So clearly Mourinho failed to get the most of his young team and forced his board to make a choice. They chose the players and were right in that assessment as even a novice manager is allowing Pogba to fulfill the potential we all suspected he had.Â
On Emery, it is possible that he is not getting the most out of either Ramsey and Ozil, the two players he most regularly attacked for.Â
But what if Sanllehi put the following two conditions in placeÂ
- I am giving you 2 years (not 1) to build a team that will compete for league honors. Year 1 is a foundation year
- I do not expect you to invest in Ozil and Ramsey in year 1 because they won't be here in year 2Â
Would you then say that he is failing in his duties? Is he then making the most of his other charges on the path to this ambition?
(Note - I do not know what conditions are in place. All I know is Ramsey is leaving so investment in so they might choose not to invest in him, and the similar playing circumstances of Ozil suggests they might see him as departing).Â
