Uhm, that rule is there so that you won't be punished twice if you're trying to get the ball. The rule explicitly states that if you don't try to get the ball, it's still a red card. Obviously, Pickford didn't try to get the ball. As the laughable GK he is, he panicked when he made a mistake and tried to take out the striker.
