I always thought podcasters/youtubers/streamers were the lamest people ever if they weren't already an established performer, and to an extent i still do. Just a bunch of nobodies yapping into the ether. Watching the rise of all these new media people and how their followers ravenously consume their content this decade has been eye-opening. The old fuddy duddy in me can't help but feel there's a bit of an erosion in cultural tone if the next generation is looking up to these people as legitimate templates to follow.
Nowadays I agree, plenty of people are guilty of starting podcast with no premise to speak of just to call themselves podcasters. Years ago however when the podcast scene was quite different, and most big names wouldn't wanna be caught dead doing one, it was exactly the medium for non-established performers to get their work out there. And while alot of it was trash, some did flourish, and through word of mouth could create a following by creating free content on their own terms. It really was a beautiful thing.
