Just need to pay him off and let him go if needed, having his situation pending will only bring unwanted negativity. If we aren't gonna play him we might as well just give him the money and get it over and done with.

Plenty of blame on the club for giving him a contract like this, whether we like it or not he's well within his right to refuse to leave.

Sadly I get the impression that both Ozil and the club are in the wrong to some degree and have caused this mess.

That contract really has hurt the club more than any other decision in the last 5 years.

Reasonable players don't act like this. Refusing to lose money would be one thing but this is more extreme. He doesn't seem willing to go on loan, etc either. Just being a complete dickhead.

The transparency around contracts is really unfortunate.
I cannot point to a specific thing that Mesut Ozil has done wrong yet he is a painted as demon. I think in future, contract details shouldn’t be public.

Knowing the contract details for players doesn't cause issues like this with anyone else.

Think it was the club's decision to drop him and not Arteta's. Before covid he was still playing regularly, then he refused to take the pay cut, and since then he hasnt even been in the match day squad.

I don't know, but it's a bit curious that Özil's name was the only one that got leaked. It's easy to speculate why.

Hope not. Dropping Ozil was one of the best decisions he made all season. We look far better without him.

But this Ozil issue has been raging for 2 seasons now. And every time he’s mentioned, the first thing that comes up is that £18m a year. He didn’t hold Gazidis over a balcony like Suge Knight did Vanilla Ice and force him to sign that contract. So why is he the bad guy?

I refuse to believe that Arteta isn't in control of who plays and not. If you don't even decide that you don't decide anything.

I don't think he's entirely in control of either who's playing or who we're signing. He had never managed a game before he got the job. I'm sure he accepted many things that a more experienced manager would never have agreed to, which is partly why he got it in the first place.

It's pretty normal nowadays to not be entirely in charge of who the club is signing. Who he's playing is a whole different level of limitations though.

Yep, a whole different level. I choose to believe that Art noted the lack of compromise of Ozil in trainings and thus decided to just freeze him

His decision to ride the pine come hell or high water instead of seeking new pastures rankles though. If the club made it clear he wasnt in their plans at all next season, you would hope he'd open to the club finding a subsidized landing place for him. I get the sense he and his agent are in a PR pissing contest to sell their side of the story to the supporters, and both are doing a crap job

If I had £18m coming my way late in my career, I wouldn't be running around declaring that I will work for peanuts in Istanbul. That's crazy behaviour.

But we're talking about subsidizing his salary so he doesn't lose out or potentially even gains, which is the point. It's his prerogative, he doesn't have to go anywhere if he doesn't want to, but it does paint a vivid picture about his desire and motivation to play football.

Have we explicitly said that we would keep him whole?
I doubt that we would publicly say that because it would disadvantage us. The last thing we want is to alert Europe's clubs that we are willing to pay a significant portion of the wage. They need to offer to put a big wage in front of him. If he accepts it without a need for a top-up, we are free of him. If he says he likes it but he wants to be kept whole, we can top it up. But it is not to our advantage to advertise that we are willing to keep him whole in a transfer.

Just because it's within someone's right to do something it doesn't mean they can't still be an asshole for doing so.
