Interesting.
The week-in, week-out Ozil questions have broken Emery as he demonstrated in his last post-match presser.
Wenger would have continued defending the board like he did for a decade but now we know this is Raul's strategy
I think fans will ease off from blaming him with the knowledge that it is a board directive and not a football decision.
Obviously money is the overriding factor, as Captain pointed out (up to £150k a week?), with the jackpot being Ozil accepting a lower wage which would help the club find a buyer.
I disagree that it's anything to do with 150k/week, as at worst that amounts to 7.8m per year, whereas CL Group Stage was worth about 35m last time we were in it. Even if we were to combine the 150k to Ozil's wages of 350k/week then we're still only talking 26m per year. Financially we have more to gain by playing Ozil to play to regain CL revenues, rather than paying him 18.2m to sit at home so as to 'save' 7.8m per year.
Whilst our wages were an issue last season that's not the case this season. Not only have we lost a number of wage earners (Rambo, Welbeck, Mkhi, Kos, Iwobi, Monreal, Lichtsteiner, Elneny), we've also improved our revenues via the new kit deal with Addidas. So far neither Laca nor PEA have signed new deals, and Pepe would not be on huge wages despite his transfer fee. Lastly the domestic FFP re wages increase per season as a fixed % of revenues has ended as at the end of last season.
I don't think it's anything more than Ozil not fitting Emery's preference as CAM & the new structure have supported him in his decision made last season re both Ozil & Rambo (as well as the DoF decision re Rambo's contract negotiations).
Similarly I think Emery feels he cannot afford to take Ozil back with open arms because he will lose credibility in his role as Head Coach after trying to get him to leave over the best part of 18 months.
