what? he was an assistant captain last season. i think he captained the team a few times in the europa league. wilshere leaving opened the 10 shirt, but i think the manager still needs to be okay with players changing numbers, doesnt he?

It was only due to seniority that he was given it and nothing to do with Emery wanting him to feel loved, valued and important.
The player Emery said was the most important was Ramsey and that was just to get him to sign.
As soon as he realised he wasn't going to sign, that "importance" disappeared

and amy lawrence is one of the most credible arsenal writers out there and has been for years. shes not talking shit or inventing anything, shes been as plugged in on the team as anyone for the last few years

Have seen another piece elsewhere suggesting there was a fall out between Coach and player last season that has directly lead to the current scenario with Ozil not being selected at any level.

The article alluded to some comments made by Ozil when he was subbed off in the Europa Final. However I also recall there to have been at least 1 other time when Ozil was supposed to have made a comment under similar circumstances along with the throwing of his jacket, although at the time it was not clear who the comment & jacket were directed at.

What seems of interest is both alleged comments (if correct) correspond with what is now being said in the press and in here - that Emery is not a Head Coach and that he is a coward in terms of his tactics and selections.

Whilst there may be an issue regarding Ozil not fitting Emery's requirements, perhaps the bigger issue is a clash of approach/opinion between Head Coach and a senior player off the pitch as much as on it.

I'm talking about the connection between Özil allegedly saying that and that Emery is not a head coach and a coward. If Özil said something like that and Emery kept selecting him, that'd certainly make him a coward.

First of all I'm not a fan of comparing football to "normal jobs". There are tons of managers who have extremely clever football minds, but that's not enough because they need to be respected and make the players believe it as well. If you have a player who you think haven't applied himself enough in training and on top of that calls you a fucking pussy and you still play him in front of the guys we have, he'd never be respected. Second, no I haven't. Been managed by many people though, none of whom I would consider calling something like that, regardless of what I think of them.

It’s weird. In ‘normal’ jobs we apply principles from fields as far afield as the military. Yet football is somehow unique? You’re motivating humans to work together towards a common goal. As in many environments, you deal with lots of different personalities, and sometimes deal with a range of ages/maturities. You need to pick your battles.

If Emery has a conflict with Ozil over petty things, then he will not succeed. If, however, Ozil has alienated himself by being uncooperative, then he needs to shape up or ship out. I suspect it’s the latter, and then as a fan base we assume it’s the former because many of us dislike Emery due to his playing style and immediately assign all kinds of problems to him. I’ve done it before- for example, in the grand scheme of things, picking an individual captain itself is not important. The media and fans create get hysterical about it. And then we use it as a stick to beat Emery with.

I suspect the latter as well so I'm not sure what we're arguing about. If Özil does't apply himself in training and calls Emery a fucking pussy (implying that he doesn't agree with Emery's tactics and doesn't want to follow his instructions) that to me is alienating himself by being uncooperative. Not that the sources for this seem very credible anyway.

whatever's up with Ozil and whoever's fault it is it's clear it can't continue. The faster we've unburdened the team and the player the better.
