We can estimate that Chelsea paid an additional amount for Torres, about 15%.

😆 Fuck off Arsene.

You see there he goes again, equating the worth of a deal to his fixed value rather than outcome.

Yes it will have been a waste of money if Torres flops.
But it will have been a bargain if his goals help them win something or even requalify for the CL.

That's nonsense. If I was so desperate for a Caling Cup final ticket that I pay someone an extra £100 for it, I'm still overpaying regardless of whether or not its worth it.

I don't know what else he said, and I'm the last person to defend Wenger's transfer policy, but there's nothing actually wrong with those quotes, other than that if Mourinho was still here, he'd probably be calling Arsene a voyeur today.

On Torres, cannot help but feel he's a hair's width away from scoring an absolute shedload for Chelsea - his movement, and ability to create space for himself in the box when he's got the ball at his feet is still brilliant. We can all enjoy laughing at him for not scoring for now, but if he keeps playing like this it's only a matter of time.

Of course he is going to score goals, I doubt anyone would deny that.

My main concern if I were a Chelsea fan would not be Torres but those behind him. No creativity at all.. ironically a lot like Liverpool.

You remember where we were talking about strikers who could score goals despite being in front of crap midfielders?

Well, Torres is one of those.

No doubt, as he proved at Liverpool. But you wonder what sort of damage he could do in a team like ours, United's or I hate to say it, Tottenham.

It's not exactly a miracle.

Well, I'm just hopeful he figures out how to do some damage at Chelsea sooner rather than later. Nemanja Vidic will crap himself.

Contradiction.

If it's worth it then by definition it is not overpaying. Because overpaying is paying beyond the worth of the item/service.

I agree with Biggus tbh.

15% more?

Well he's worth the market value at the time. If they paid for him in 10 years time then he wouldn't even be worth half 50 million quid. So by buying Torres now they paid more than an extra 50%. Where do you draw the line?

Chelsea needed/wanted a striker then so they didn't pay any additional amount but the exact amount they were willing to pay. And Liverpool wanted 15 million quid more than whatver price they bought Carroll which is maybe why Andy went for so much. If Torres fires Chelsea into CL places or wins the Champions' League then who cares about 50 million pounds? The Trophy is priceless and the money you receive from winning it is a lot. As are the shirt sales that Torres would make. The publicity in general Chelsea would get in advertising etc would be increased. It's a knock on effect.

Imagine if we were in a battle with Chelsea for Torres. We would lose out because of 15% above Wenger's evaluations and not market value.

Fuck off Arsene? With an intellectual opening like that who could fail to be swayed.
Seriously Biggus, do you ever have anything positive to say? About anything?

Anyway to the point you made, I dont see anything wrong with the quotes.

"Emotion and a lack of time saw the market value become inflated but, now, Chelsea could become even more dangerous. The trio of Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Fernando Torres represents a real danger."

What exactly is false about the above? I'm at a loss to undestand it - indeed similar comments were made on this forum, and indeed most articles around the transfer pointed out the same thing, questioning just why did Chelsea leave it so late as they did have to then pay a premium.

Is Torres worth it? Short term, hard to say. He hasnt blossomed so far, though he well may do so before the end of the season. Regarding CL qualification, are you qualifying that as success Biggus 😮 (tongue firmly in cheek). Again he may well do so, but what does this do for Chelsea's long term prospects for CL qualification post-Financial Fair Play?

Re: Chelseas midfield, I'd agree with though money probably would have sat well there. Not sure any striker will prosper without decent level of creativity behind him. Any striker is dependent on supply , and at the minute Chelsea look lacklustre in that department. Berkovic is still injured, Malouda is almost a dirty word at the minute to Ancelotti.

There's nothing different in what Wenger has said there to any of the quotes by Ferguson etc who said exactly the same thing. Get off the high horse Biggus 😃

Who is Berkovic? You talking about Eyal Berkovic who used to play for Citeh? Not sure how that's possible unless you mistakingly confused him with Benayoun?

Err I meant it in the jovial "are you serious" sense, you being Irish I thought you would have understood that.

As regards not saying anything positive, if you've read anything I've posted recently you'll notice that-

  • I'm delighted with Szczesny and want him played every game. 8)

*Have called Almunia a sack of crap who should never play for us again. 😃

  • Have defended Koscienly & Chamakh. :hat:

  • Been open minded about the possibility of knocking out Barcelona. 🙂

The time to see if Chelsea have overspent on Torres is at the end of the season when we can all evaluate what he's achieved, not what Wenger or anyone thinks should be the value according to his criterion.

No, it's not. It's paying over the market value.

jovial sigh, with you Biggus its hard tell with it comes to Arsene! I think you'd happi tie the man to a rocket and wave bye-bye as he circles the Moon.

I think the point Wenger was making was around the timing of the transfer and it was curious to say the least. I'm just hoping he will fire on all cylinders against Utd . Agree on all the rest. Think Szczesny will become one of the top keepers in the league. And keep upo the good work with the smiley faces, I'll recognise moods then 😃

Yup Loyan , been one of those days 😃

i think it's obvious chelsea overpaid for torres. fantastic player, though, if he stays healthy.

It was a statement more than anything else. They could've found a better - or at least as good and less injury prone - player for less money, both in the summer and in january. It's a bit like Real when they signed Kaka without having a defined role for him. At least half of the reason was because they figured he'd sell a lot of shirts.

Hmm Klaus so you're saying that he's saying Chelsea are rattled and panicking that they may not win the CL nor qualify next year.
