Because people who do executive jobs plan very often plan things out many months in advance. I'm working with clients where I can see what the executive pipeline looks like for the next 3-9 months out. It takes a long time to dissolve existing contracts, and a long time to onboard new people. Managers are executive level people. So even though we announced Wenger last month, it would not be surprising if discussions had been ongoing with him and outsiders for several months prior to that.

If everything has only just started in the last few weeks, then I find it a bit odd.

If anything the signings of Sanllehi, Fahmy and Mislintat show that they were head hunted for a specific reason amd purpose as part of the new structure, so in that regard at worst I'd say Gazidis has been building this since his 'catalyst for change' statement last season.

You can plan for the eventuality without actually making a move. You know what your next manager looks like and you know the structure you want him to operate in. Aside from that, it's absolutely the right thing to give the current manager the best possible environment to perform in, and that doesn't involve approaching every manager out there while he still thinks he has a job.

Nope, he's going to RB Salzburg, with the very impressive Marco Rose going Leipzig in a straight swap by the Redbull management.

I know the club are trying to position themselves as having some kind of masterplan that has ended up with deciding Arteta is the right man for the job but I really don't find that narrative persuasive.

Ultimately, this should have been scoped out months ago (before Wenger got sacked) so that we wouldn't be in a position where the leading candidates have turned us down and we're basically left with Arteta vs other managerial non-entities.

Would love this to work out but can't help but feel we'll be hiring again in 12-24 months when someone better has hopefully become available.

If it doesn’t work out then Nagelsmann, Allegri will be available next year. Tedesco would be ideal.

You're assuming that Arteta wasn't The Egg's plan all along.

The kind of appointments, restructures and rebuilds we've undertaken in the last 18 months suggest to me that Gazidis has been planning for life without Wenger a long time, and he's trying to make sure that whether we succeed or fail going forward from here has less to do with the capriciousness of a single person. We're delibertately building an organisation where the next manager's powers and responsibilities will be a lot more limited compared to Wenger's.

I really don’t understand the narrative that, with better planning, we’d have been able to secure the likes of Allegri. What has changed in the last couple of months to make them suddenly unattainable? Literally nothing. They’ve not signed new deals, they’ve not joined other clubs, they’re still there for the taking... if they’re interested, and if we want them.

Totes Y. We won't be boring next season at least, and in itself that's gonna be a huge improvement on this one.

Edit: I still think there are one or two names in the running that media haven't reported on though. If Arteta were decided on then you'd think we would have announced it by now.
