Hard for me to be that opposed to it given we're playing Holding, Chambers, Mertesacker (and even Mustafi is woefully inconsistent) regularly at the moment.

Evans is no fool and he'd be an improvement right now for sure.

On the face of it you're right. I'm against it purely because of the consequences of his purchase. I'd rather we either aim higher or stick with what we've got until we get a top class defender some time in the next year or so.

I'd rather not be spending money on the likes of Evans who at 29 isn't likely to improve (and is probably only heading in the opposite direction) and will most likely leave those in charge feeling defence is not an issue for the next few years.

Seriously though - I'd accept Evans as a short-term solution if Wenger is hellbent on signing him, but make no mistake: he's just going to be another Squillaci or Debuchy for us. He has no use beyond this season. He's not a starting player unless we're aiming for another season in Europa League, and the second he realises that he will tail off and become a burden. He's 30. His last big move will be all about picking up a paycheck and maybe the odd cup to improve his CV.

Everything about him screams bad signing with this in mind.

We are signing him mostly because there is faith in others like Chambers, Holding, Bielik and the "greek boy" to come good.

Which is completely the wrong way to go about building a squad even if true. We've been making these same mistakes ever since we started dismantling the Invincibles.

Fuck Johnny Evans. He's not going to improve us. We aren't going to stop shipping goals with him in the team and he'll be declining as a player every season from here on out. What a spectacular waste of money he'd be. I'd much rather play Chambers or Holding for the rest of the season than sign such a mediocre player.

100% agree

Then don’t sign anyone. We’ve got Kos and Nacho to play the old experienced pros role. Evans just doesn’t make any sense though, and very unlike Wenger. At least the likes of Squilachi and Mert were dirt cheap.

Preach. Disgusting character too with a face that only a blind mother would love

We’ve offered 10m plus Debuchy apparently. Not clear if the 10m is for Debuchy or Evans.

I can't wait to see an Evans, Mkhitaryan, Welbeck spine. That will be a new low.

Might as well bring Silvestre back as a defensive coach

I don't mind it. AW has proven time and time again that he isn't the greatest and coaching defenders. Have no faith in any of our young defenders to become top players under Wenger. Bring in experienced defenders on a regular basis who don't need a lot of coaching. If he is an organizer, even better. It's what we need.

And to top it all, watch Ozil join the evil empire in the summer. Depressing stuff

I know you are half joking but welbeck will never start and mhki is hardly a 'spine' player.

Evans is fine, has won more than all our team put together.

Johnny Evans is a good defender and would 100% improve us. His age isn’t ideal though.

So did Welbeck. Is he better than Özil?

Evans would be an embarrassing signing. Another one to add to the Manc rejects that Wenger has developed a fetish for collecting.

Pardew practically begging for a bid. Some other reports around that we've offered £10m + Debuchy. Not massively keen but that'd be a good deal.

Actually just started watching him now. His West Brom side are currently 3-1 up at Anfield. Although, they've just shown the error he made for Liverpool's goal and it was a bad one. Liverpool are hilariously bad in this second half so far but it's a good chance to see him having to do a lot of defending.

Also, from what I can gather, VAR has been used to award a goal, disallow two goals and award a penalty, the last of which took more than 4 minutes apparently. All this and it's only the 55th minute!

Needs to be quicker so that it doesn't take away the excitement.

Liverpool have their best team out here and they're pitiful.

Chris Brunt just did something brilliant but I'm not sure how to even begin to explain it! 😆

Evans just got done with a chipped through ball and then pulled off an impressive roulette to get out of trouble from the resulting loose ball.

Not really noticed what a dirty little shit he is before!

Liverpool have got a jammy goal back. Not Evans' fault, Hegazi to blame if anything.

Not sure, but I think Evans has pulled His hamstring...

Yup, I was right, he has. He's having to stay on though because they've made their subs and Livermore is also a passenger and has been limping around up front for the past 10 minutes.

Evans might just be ruling himself out of a move here. Playing on one leg.

The Scousers are out! Absolutely dire in the second half. Pitiful. And given they were 3-1 down from the first half they can't have been much better there!

Evans was a bit of a warrior there I must admit. Won a couple of big headers on one leg. Looks like he might be out for at least a few weeks the way he's limping post match now though.

Heh, thanks for the commentary Ricky 😆

Watching the FA Cup, I was thinking why didn't we run Sanchez to the ground and make him cup tied?

I don't know why, but I PMSL at "fetish" 😆

The club has a hard on for this guy clearly. I thought we wouldn't hear his name again after we signed mustafi, but our interest has remained since summer 2016

Considering how much PL is worth to West Brom why the hell would they sell cheap on deadline day? I swear the numpties we have running this club...

Not saying we should or shouldn't be in for him but if you want to make a bid and think he can help us get CL football then make it respectable.

Guy is 30 and, should West Brom be relegated, will be available for just 3m in the summer. There's no way we should be offering much more than 12m.
